Hi, I'm finally getting my car back together. I put the rest of the bolts from the trans, a 200-4R, to the 455. Then I noticed that the torque converter was not bolted to the flex plate. It moves about 1/4" between the flex plate and the trans housing. Is this acceptable? I don't think that I should put a washer in there to take up the space. And now I have to find the 10mm bolts. Back to Summit Racing I guess.
Yes you NEED the gap... Google the required clearance I don't remember off hand what it is for that trans but should be easy to find.
The spec was 3/16" to give the pump seal breathing space from the Torque converter hub/face. Use a 3/16" drill bit between the flexplate and T.C. bolt bosses rather than the eyeball method. Suggest using S.A.E. washers if you need to take up a little space. S.A.E. means they are a consistent size/thickness, also may be known as machinist's washers.
OK, if I'm reading this right, when the torque converter is pushed against the transmission, I should have 3/16" gap between the torque converter mounting tabs and the flywheel. Any more than that and I should add a washer so the when bolted up, the torque converter is 3/16" away from the transmission. Can I just use grade 8 10mm bolts to bolt this up with some thread lock or do I need specific torque converter bolts?
http://www.tciauto.com/tc/auto-trans-faq#4 Yes, grade 8 bolts. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/arp-230-7304/overview/
Hey guys - saw this post and thought you might be able to help. Do you happen to know what the torque spec is for the 3 bolts attaching the flexplate on a 69 GS TH350 to the torque converter? One of my bolts had sheered off, so I am replacing all of them and can't find the spec. Thanks for the help!
