A "wet behind the ears" question to follow up my "howdy"

  1. What octane fuel can I run in my 1975 LeSabre 350? Seller is recommending 93 octane . . .. and don't drive over 65mph. . . . Er?

Ask him why you can’t drive over 65. Learn that now.
I’d probably go 89 and higher

Dont drive over 65 more than likely means you'll be using twice the amount of fuel..

  4. I think we are both getting excited. I'm really looking forward to having this car down here & I think he is maybe being a little cautious because my wife (Flying to the state it is in) is picking it up initially (to drive up to a conference) and I'll get up there some days later and swap her daily driver for my new Buick. I'll head on back and get back to work. . . she'll bring the boys down some days later after time with grandparents.

So 89 octane. Do these things have cruise control? It has been probably 5 or 6 years since I even saw this car in person & I didn't note much about the interior as I wasn't even thinking about buying it then.

If the previous owner drove the car mostly in town and on short trips there’s a good chance you’ll have carbon buildup on the pistons. They can make hot spots and detonation, so a higher octane can be helpful. Long highway runs will help it clean itself. Not sure why he wants you to keep it under 65 though; if it does anything other than float effortlessly at that speed and higher something is wrong. It will drink more though.

  6. Thank you! That is awesome. No, I have no pictures. The seller of the car has been a friend for 25 years, though we have been states apart for most of them. He is nearing "done driving" age and knows it. I'd take care of his car regardless of price/ condition if I can afford it. For now, it appears I can & now is the time.

...And five of them were GM! LeSabre, Grand Ville, Caprice, Delta 88, and El Dorado. (What was the sixth? I can’t remember).

I thought it might be, but a quick search didn’t bring one up. So all six were GM products—cool!

Everything after 70 that is stock can run 89 octane unless it has issues. 71 is when they went to 8.5 to 1 compression pistons in everything. 70 and older usually had higher compression that require higher octane or the engine will knock, especially the sportier engines.

65 is probably the speed limit:p. Need to ask him why though.
