There should be an experimental job number stamped in the block. That number will need to be reviewed and documented by Denny. Pardon our skepticism, but like anything else, a buyer will need some form if verifiable documentation.

Well its not a 4bolt so......
The material under the cap does appear thicker and the casting line isn't present that normally would be ,but no one is gonna buy a assumed to.be high dollar essentially stock block and build some 1 of 6 block, so were talking a shop decoration with which only the informed buick population will know to be different than the garden variety one, it would take one eccentric person to pay mega bucks for something thats in effect useless, granted to which.there are plenty of and I.too would be excited about such a find , I just wouldn't be getting my hopes up forsome mega payday us all im getting at

Some misinformation here. Denny told me they made UP to six 4-bolt blocks. So far I know of three. This is not one of them...this to me is more along the lines of the experimental 430 engine? Not taking anything away from it...it's still an experimental piece. I've read somewhere Kenne-Bell was testing "the upcoming 455" engine" in there '68 car to get ready for the 1970 season. Maybe this block is on the lines of a preproduction piece?

X2, it may be cool, but I like stuff you can build and run, not a living room sculpture to stare at:laugh:

Having extensively handled and restored one of the 4 bolt main blocks, I can say that the casting looks the same. I assume that it says "455" between the ears on the bellhousing, and that is how this gentleman is identifying it.

It does have the x in the right place and the extra oil hole for oiling the 430 style rockers in the RH deck, so it is the correct pre-production 455 vintage.

Although I have no information to back this up, those main web pictures would indicate that it did get cast the same time as the blocks that actually were later machined for the 4 bolt caps, although it was never fitted for those caps.

So I might be hesitant to term it as "one of the six".

They may have made a number of those blocks with the modified webbing, for engineering use. All would have been marked with the X.

I doubt you will find a engineering number on it, Dennis told me this was an "off the books" project. They did this work with the castings on their own time, either at lunch, or after their normal day had ended.

There was no number that I recall on the real 4 bolt main block I restored.

If this one has a number on it, it may be because this block was later released into another engineering project, or into production if it actually has a VIN or Parts dept number stamped on it.

I would suspect that did happen to it, from the look of it, it has all stock factory pieces on it, not unlike any other 455 of that era.

So while notable due to the markings and vintage, I might suggest that the seller temper his enthusiasm as to what the market will bring.

Then again, you all know what PT Barnum said..

There should be engineering numbers stamped on the block.

If so then Denny would have his notes on it and be able to tell if it was just a block, or part of an engine "package" deal when it left the factory.

The date codes cast into the block would also help with identifying when it was made.

That makes more sense Jim, than a preproduction piece.

Greg, to echo what others have said, post pics of the main caps. If there aren't 4 bolts (as those who are intimately familiar with these blocks have stated they doubt), then I'm afraid your piece may not be as desirable as you think. I geek out over rare/obscure buick history, so I'm eager to get some answers as to what this thing really is. Good luck with the sale, please give us all the info you can!

Shawn, see post #22 on page 1. Looks like beefy webs as seen on the 4 bolt block, but this one didn't go through the conversion.

Shawn, you can see in one of his pictures it's not a 4-bolt block.
