Stock alternators were externally regulated. They were pretty weak compared to the internally regulated 10 and 12SI alternators. Pretty easy to convert over.
I did the 10SI conversion. No wiring had to be chopped or anything defaced. Got the adapter plug and made a connector/jumper for the regulator plug.
That's a pretty good deal from Summit for a 100 amp . 100 amp should be enough for most people . If you want more I would suggest an upgraded Wire Harness .
got the new alternator but connections are different.. 1 and 2 vs r and f. Does it matter which goes where?
Great...wish I had ordered this earlier. Do you know if a part store carry this? I wanted to get her in today.
A speed shop may have it. You can get the 10 si plug from a napa but this will require cutting the original plug off and the making a jumper for the regulator. The kit is nice and neat.
Pretty much any parts store will carry the SI pig tail under the HELP label, https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/GRO841034 The wiring can be very simple. Cut the brown wire at the external regulator. Extend it (the firewall end) to the alternator with another piece of wire. Connect that to the white wire on the pigtail. The red wire of the pigtail goes to the charging post on the back of the alternator along with the original charging wire. Done. This article makes it a bit more complicated than that. It tells you to eliminate the white wire of the old pigtail completely. Then connect the brown wire to the blue wire at the external regulator. Then the blue wire goes to the white wire of the pigtail. Same thing, my way is simpler. http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/alternat.htm
That's why I say look at the external regulator. From bottom to top, the 4 wires should be Brown, Red, White, Blue.
