Has anyone used the semi-gloss black acrylic lacquer in a spray can from this company? I am at the point where I need to spot prime a couple of small areas on the lower dash, give it a final sanding, and shoot it. I'm thinking about going with lacquer simply to avoid incapability problems. Is their stuff any good or is just over priced rustoleum quality paint? If it is garbage, I'll just go with a base/clear system. The base/clear will look good just not quite right though. Thanks
I haven't used the Tower paint, but spray can lacquer is also available from Rust-Oleum, Krylon, and Valspar. They all use Acetone as the primary solvent, as does Tower..... looking at the MSDS sheets verifies this. Duplicolor also has ready-to-spray lacquer in quart cans. Use can safely put enamel over original paint or lacquer, but don't put lacquer over enamel.... the solvents will lift the enamel.
I recommend them highly. It is not Rustoleum. I have restored three cars including the dash with the stuff. Make sure they use the POG CODES. it is closest to stock. For the upper dash use the flat code(0 gloss). The flat even works on the dash pad. The only problem you may run into is your old paint may not match in gloss to new. It is over 40 years old. You may do better painting it all.
Sorry guys I didn't mean to imply that I was not painting the whole dash. The whole dash and steering column are getting painted so it all matches. This may sound stupid, but what are POG codes? I was going to order using the codes listed for gloss and flat using the PPG paint codes listed here (see page 2): http://www.autocolorlibrary.com/aclchip.aspx?image=1972-Buick-pg01.jpg Is there another type of code that I should be using? Older thread .... I just finished using APS Tower acrylic lacquer for the dash and steering column /blame copperheadgs1 :TU: .....little pricey for a can but looks very good .....so I say worth the money. I ordered 1 can ...... 1 light coat and 2nd one heavier on the dash and barely enough for 2 coats on the column so I would suggest 2 cans for dash and column job also note : make sure your clean and smooth on prep bcs every little scratch and high/low spot will show up , I had 2 tiny small spots that I might wet sand/fill and order another can, not sure if it will blend in so maybe one medium coat on the whole dash
My body/paint supply store creates spray cans for me using my own paint. I buy Acrylic lacquer PPG correct coded paint and when I run out of cans I take my paint in and they make me spray cans from my paint. Its $9.00 to make a can. I use these for all small parts, brackets etc. Saves on making a mess/mixing to shoot one bracket.
well..got my 2nd can in the mail so I can correct a few spots ,a slight sanding scratch and a low spot all prepped up. went to go spray and something wasn't right..different kind of sheen or whatever ...it dried fast ..I started re-shaking the can and tried again...no dice getting frustrated so took a break I was thinking temperature change so I figured I should do the whole section right of the steering wheel....came out ok but dull ....uzzled: looked at the can and I notice its flat ....they sent me wrong stuff not semi gloss.....I yelled hard in my garage at 1am  my son heard me and came to check on me ...I told him go back to sleep p^@%^ off ...wish I would of noticed it earlier
yea not for blending in ...that's why I did everything to the right of steering wheel but it was very flat looking compared to the first can they sent me ...upset at myself and them ..I am assuming it wasn't mixed right by them But I made myself feel better after wet sanding it all down and hit my local ppg and got a quart of their ditzler 9266 sprayed with 1.3 tip and now sitting pretty (just time and $ ou
Thanks for the reference to the autocolorlibrary paints. I did not realize how easy it was to get to the correct paint and colors since I am not into body work. I will save this site for future use. http://www.autocolorlibrary.com/aclc...Buick-pg01.jpg
By the way, found this site which seems like it has a lot of valuable detail. http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcodedisplay.cgi?model=Buick&year=1967&rows=50
