Outline the washers for the bolts with a sharpie before you remove them. Instant alignment.

I just spray painted the outline of the brackets with them still on, then removed it and lined it all back up with the paint when I was done.

The way this worked was pretty simple. My engine had to come out. It was Saturday. I knew i needed help with the hood. I called my buddy and he was not available until sunday. This was a bummer since i planned to have it out Saturday and to take it apart sunday. I figured I'd just get it ready to pull saturday and once he was over sunday we could remove the hood and then lift the engine right away. Well I got it ready to pull with better than half a day left so I decided to give it a shot. With the carb pad hitched directly to the cherry picker the engine came right out. 3-4 inches to spare. There was a lot of lifting the engine a few pumps and rolling it back at the same time. But it was not hard by any means. My first choice would be to pull the hood but I would not let it stop me from doing the job..

In my earlier days of age 83,I din't think to take the hood off by myself, but I did take the engine out,put it on a stand, took it apart, got the short block and got it to the machine shop.Don't remember if I needed help putting it back in,maybe Larry remembers if he helped me.Bruno.

I'll let you kids know in an hour or so. Had to send my daughter to the hardware store to get the 4 -7/16" x 1" bolts to get the motor mounts to bolt to the block. A few missing things but I didn't think to grab them from my home shop.

Jimbo, you do get that I'm not using a cumalong hanging from a tree, right? Been doing this for 30 years, and I can't remember pulling too many hoods if I didn't have to.

So, for the record, I'm not scribing fresh paint, I'm not spray painting over fresh paint. And the hood closes damn well without the engine in it, it will close just as well when I'm done.
And oh yes, it has a Poston deep sump two piece pan that hangs 3.5 inches below the flexplate. Still not taking the hood off.

Hey...a cumalong hanging from a tree works great! :D:D:D
If that's all you got, that's what you use!

I usually only resort to using a tree when the excavator's too busy! ;)

That motor looks like its on the wrong mount holes.. Could be the Picture..

    IIRC. A bodys use bolt holes 2 & 4 ......... B-C Body use 1 & 3. Front hole being. #1.

When I picked up my spare engine the guy put it in my trailer on a tire with an excavator. When I got home I manhandled and dragged the block on the tire down my ramp onto the floor. I then built this contraption to hoist it up to get it on the stand for disassembly. :) 20180626_203421.jpg

Funny story. When Hector brought it in we had to push it one bay to move his truck and trailer to get it over to another bay. Hector was the driver. we were the pushers. I asked him how the brakes were. He said he had something. It was the parking brake. Booster is in the trunk.

I pulled my first Buick motor at 16 years old in 1988... used a comealong but hanging from my mom's garage roof rafters... pulled a few motors that way... i did support the rafters with standing up 2x4 on each side... i occasionally drive by the old house and the second garage bay roof has a serious sag... woops, sorry Mom and new owner... haha.
