I came across a hood tach being sold cheap and took a chance whether it worked. Guy had it listed as a speedometer. It looks like a parts place repop and not oem. My GS455 has no tach whatsoever so I doubt I can connect without significant wiring. Is there a way to bench test the tach ?

Significant wiring? Just connect the signal wire to the - side of the coil and ground the case.

if its a repro, it might require a power lead. Some of those repros are quirky. They work only when the headlights are on. This is where test leads come in handy
