FWIW, even rubbing compound won't make your car as smooth as clay. Rubbing compound'll remove the oxidized paint, but for that girl-friend's-butt-smooth, you will need to use clay. If it's seriously faded: 1. Rubbing compound (usually red) 2. Polishing compound (usually white) 3. Clay 4. Wax
