This morning the humidity broke, a nice dry cool sunny day. I installed the Robb Mc starter. Instructions called for several adjustments if necessary. Well, it was necessary:grin: I had to rotate the solenoid relative to the nose to get the best position. That was easy, all you have to do is loosen two 5/16" bolts at the back. Then I bolted the starter up, and checked the pinion to flex plate clearance, there was almost none, so I had to use a supplied shim between the mounting plate and front of the starter. It calls for 1/16- 3/16" clearance, I had that with the shim. I also used a thin starter shim on the mounting bolts because it zinged a bit as the engine started. All seems well. I'll report back if I have any problems.

So the photos Larry included are of a modified Ford PMGR starter, re-worked to fit Buick/Chevy?

So far, it is working great. You can easily rotate the entire solenoid relative to the pinion. I have it in a position where I can easily remove all the connections without unbolting the starter from the block. Seems to have more clearance as well. Time will tell. Anything negative to say about this starter Jamie, or you'd rather not say?

At the risk of appearing stupid, the PG250 is a direct drive like the factory starter that came on our 455s, correct? The PG250 is more compact and lighter than what the 455 was born with.

Is there a GM gear drive starter that bolts up to the 455 block?

The PG250 has to be around 1/2 the weight of the stock unit. I'll see if I can get a pic tomorrow with them side-by-side.

    Jamie,

I revived your Vendor site, for a reference information only type deal.

Any starter that works with the Chevy 153-tooth flywheel works with the Buick small block/big block. Nailhead is different, Chevy 168-tooth is different.
So, yes, there's a ****load of ministarters that work with the Buick 455, including several gear reduction GM units.

Here they are. The PG250 is significantly smaller and lighter.

I see that some of these starters have a long bolt and a short one. The long bolt has a part number but what have you guys used for the short one? I have not seen a short bolt pn with the stepped diameter? Thanks!

Are you insisting on a PG250 starter? The PG260 is also a Permanent-magnet, Gear-reduction starter. It is of comparable size/weight to the PG250. (i.e., about half what the 10MT old-style Delco starter is.)

The Remy recommendation is for a PG260; the part number would be the same as for a Chevy 153-tooth flywheel. Therefore you could go to www.napaonline.com, and plug in the Remy number for the 153-tooth version, and have the appropriate NAPA number(s). This chart lists the four part numbers, 153-tooth and 168-tooth, with and without the solenoid "R" terminal.

For example, one of several NAPA interchanges for the 153-tooth, no-"R"-terminal number is:
    https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/RSE2465115?interchange=1

Be aware that if you're buying a rebuilt, you'll have to add the hefty core charge, and if you're buying new, it's almost certainly a Communist Chinese knockoff.
