I have a 1970 Big Buick AM/FM radio that I'd like to install into a 1970 Skylark. But the big Buick radio has another device attached to the top of the receiver which makes it too tall for a Skylark. I'm not sure what the "attached device" is - the rear speaker wire exits from it. Can I simply unplug it and leave it off? Has anyone been successful getting these Big Buick AM/FM radios to work in Skylarks?
I wonder if converting the internals to use the Aurora Design FMR-2 would make the "attached device" unnecessary? Does anyone have any experience with this conversion? Here's a U-Tube video of a converted 1972 Skylark radio:
According to Crockett Sound Lab, the attached device is a Multi-Plex Adapter: "Many AM/FM Mono Delco Radios are set up to work with a separate box to give FM~Stereo Operation. Some will have a shorting plug in the back, a round metal housing with a arm coming off the side with one screw holding it in place, multi pin connector some all in line some two rows of pins, that can be removed and a Multi-Plex Adapter plugged into the radio." But as Gerry points out above, the radio bezel is different so its no use trying to use it in an A body.
