I've been eying the HEI inventory on eBay for a couple of years, and they used to go for like $300+, but something happened and a couple of new versions appeared for quite a bit less. I was at first hesitant regarding these, and contacted one of the sellers to see if I could find out some more info. It turns out they're made overseas (as expected), but he insisted that it was still a good unit with a three year warranty, took GM replacement parts, and the company that makes them (http://www.topstreetperformance.com/) had a booth at the PRI show. It seemed legit enough for the money, so I ordered a unit with wires for $189 delivered. So far it looks like a quality unit.
I asked for the wires that you assemble yourself, and that wasn't a problem, and also got the 135 degree angle on the plug boots. We'll see how it goes once installed. I don't have anything to do with the person selling this or the company, but thought it might be interesting for others to see.
I have installed a bunch of those knock off ones and haven't had any issues. You should have no issues with your setup. make sure you have a ign 12v source and not the ign wire with a resistor inline. Paul turbocharged 401 nailhead
I was thinking about buying one of these for my nailhead but found a used MSD pro billet ready-to-run for $200 with coil and wires. I love HEI, i have a pro-billet HEI unit on the 383 stroker i just built for my 69 Chevy Pickup. And i swapped the ignition thats currently in the truck now to HEI. Never had a problem with it.
I bought one of those for the 350 in my '64 Skylark and it worked perfectly. I just replaced the 350 with a 425 and wondering if there is enough room for an HEI distributor. I laid an HEI cap on top for comparison and it looks awful close anyone know the answer to this?
