Fuel filter is in carb fuel inlet. Parts stores may have them hanging on the shelf, it's a small long paper filter. Make sure you put the filter spring back in, (goes in before the filter, presses the filter towards the inlet) don't overtighten or cross thread the inlet or you'll basically ruin the carb. I spray water at night checking for spark irregularities. not a lot, just one little spritz if you have a good spray bottle. On the mist setting.

    Thanks guys.

I have ordered a fuel filter, spark plug leads, and will start with the ignition when I get the things in the post in a fortnight or so.
I already have a new cap and rotor arm, but thought there was little point putting them on until I bit the bullet and got leads at least. I was hoping my father would be taking another trip to the States for work, but that's not on the immediate horizon so... the Internet wins again.

Will do ignition first- cap, rotor, spark leads. Plugs were replaced about 8k miles ago with Champion RV15YC's. I do also have the original AC Delco's if I track down a spark plug problem itself for testing. Though, to me- it never really felt like an ignition problem - But we'll see.

Then to look down the fuel route with the filter. Also purchased a re-build kit on-line too.

    Long time but.. Life..

Put new spark plugs wires, rotor arm and distributor cap on the other day. Not a jot of difference.

    Next step! Tackle the Carburettor!

Carburettor rebuilt! And once again.. not the slightest change!

Carb was not that bad. pretty good actually.. I would have thought it would be a lot worse- but it was great! I didn't break out the idle mixture jets, but tried to clean into them from the bore side as much as possible. Down the line I think I will cut the mixtire screws out.
And I know this thread is being overlooked because it's pretty boring- but i like to note down possible resolutions for future readers..

    Anyway.. List of things done:

EGR Removed for testing- no difference
    smog pump removed.
    caburettor cleaned - no diference.
ht leads, rotor and distributor cap changed - no difference.

The car does not bog, idle is consistent and on point rpm wise, power is linear. All diaphragms work on the carb. Exactly as it was before i did the above. I'm scratching my head now.
Must be a vaccum leak that i've been unable to trace down right!?

This video shows exactly my situation..
