I have a 1972 Skylark ragtop with a factory white bench (very uncomfortable). I bought a console off of a used Buick Parts enthusiast named Lloyd Chamney from Carp, ON. Can I use NON GM seats with an white vinyl upholstery job instead of GM strato buckets? A friend did a 1956 chev with Lexus seats and upholstered them red cloth with a chev emblem. They look sweet on that car and have power features
Considering that most car seats within a same general era are roughly the same size, and some seats are made by a different manufacturer than just the original car manufacturer. ( Think about the Recaro's in the third gen Camaro, And Lear-Sieglar that were used in the Buck GN and the Mercury Capri of the same era). I've seen later model car seats used in older cars on many occasions; the hard part is that most seats have floor tracks designed for a specific car, but are easily swapped or custom modified. The expensive part is going to be having the newer seats recovered in an older 'custom' material...And you may not like the end result after all the expense.
I use the seats out of a 2001 Chrysler Sebring convertible. Getting harder to find though. Had to do some fab work for the mounts but was not that hard. I wanted these seats because they have a built in shoulder harness and are very comfortable.
An additional note: A lot of seats use the same attachment points and pattern, just different tracks and mounts. Also, most bench seat cars don't have the inner mounts installed.
I used acura tl seats with type S backings. They were slimer. A big pain to instal since the floor is not flat. Had to use spacers. If your tracks arent even they bind. Also had to lower the seat part into tbe frame more. Because I was too high. But in the end well worth the effort. All the movement lumbar comfort and heated. Seat covers are all i need now to match color.
I used seats from a 01 Trans Am in one car and am using GTP seats in my other 71. I had to fab up mounts. Total pain in the azz but so worth it.
