Can you convert wipers from exposed to Hidden 71-Skylark

I currently have the rectangle motor. Looking around on the web, it's available but the round version is very easily found. I am curious if I wanted to replace with newer round style to make the wipers hidden when they shut off, is it as simple as replacing the motor/pump assembly or do the rods that hold the wipers or the switch on the dash have to be replaced?

I don't know about the switch, but if you change to the recessed wiper motor you will also have to change the lower chrome piece at the bottom of the windshield. The one for the recessed wipers is totally different, as the wipers need to "park" on that chrome piece.

Those non-recessed wiper chrome pieces are hard to find in good shape.

If you look at Adams post about the 72 GSX resto he is doing now, (72 GSX Stage1 4 Speed) he just posted some nice pics of one and the parking style wiper motor so you can see the differences. The pics are on page 13 posts #249 and 251.

Could the transmission (that’s what they call the hidden arms assembly be different too? Pretty sure the switches are all the same.

What Dave said...the transmission is different because it has the pin for the articulating arm on the driver's side. The driver arm is different. It's do-able, but it would be the chrome like Duane said, the transmission, the motor, the driver arm and...maybe the motor arm, too. I don't think you need a switch.

I started gathering parts to convert my 72 to hidden park. I have the chrome strip, transmission, wiper arms and motor. I am missing the washer pump. It was one of those projects I just never got around to before I got rid of my Skylark.

Does anyone happen to know if the passenger side wiper arm is the same or different on the exposed wipers vs. the depressed wipers?

Best bet is get everything from a donor car.

I'm pretty sure the passenger side is the same hidden or non-hidden. On a non-hidden car the 2 arms are the same, it's just positioned lower on the transmission shaft. On a hidden car you need that articulating arm and transmission for the wipers to hide. What Dave said, the best deal is to find a complete set up off a donor car. Not a lot of them on Skylarks and Cutlass, but a lot of them on Chevelles.

Same switch, however it is wired different.
    Check your service manual.

I just checked the assembly manual, and Frank is correct that on the exposed wipers both the left-hand and right-hand wiper arms are the same. They are not the same as either of the wiper arms on depressed wipers.

That's interesting James, I thought the pass arm was the same either way. Now that somebody has mentioned the wiring...I think there is a small like 6" harness that you need for cars w/o hidden wipers. That's how the wiring gets changed. So, if going to hidden. you would need to remove that short piece. I don't know...I've worked on so many BPOC A bodies of that time, but that's what I remember.

Engine and under dash harnesses are the same so a jumper makes sense.
