Just got the Skylark out of the shop, fixed all the wiring and now it starts...the only problem is it idles at a high rpm and seems to be flooding out very quickly. I can start it back up by the WOT method but as soon as I engage into drive it stalls out again. Does the carb need to be retuned?

Step one. Set the float level.

Id say step 1, get a vacuum gauge. Step 2, print out the tuning guide from Holleys website. I used those 2 steps and they made my life much easier.

Im gonna bring it into a carb shop tomorrow since I have no real experience working on carburetors and I don't want to make things worse. I really do think its the carburetor though because the car starts up no problem but practically sprays unburnt gasoline out the exhaust...idles fine but kills as soon as I give it gas, and then needs to be started in full throttle position. Does this sound like it just needs to be adjusted or does it need a complete rebuild?

One other thing I forgot to mention...When I had brought it in to have the alternator replaced, the mechanic said he also reconnected the electrical to the carburetor which I am assuming is for the electric choke. He also said it idled higher now that the carb wires were reconnected....could this be the culprit?

If the choke is staying closed, that will kill the engine very quickly. After the engine starts, there is a mechanism that opens the choke blade about 1/4" to lean the mixture so the engine will run. You can stick a pen or screw driver in the choke blade to hold it open and see if the engine will run.

Yep,,, and I might add,,,, the choke plate is supposed to be set with the engine stone cold,,,,, to a spec of 3/16 ths at the back of the choke blade/ carb body,,, stone cold..... if you set the choke on a warmed up engine/carb , you are messing up....
