Eventually i need to change the front pump seal on my TH-400. I was told a while back by an old schooler that i would need some kind of a special tool to remove the front pump and/or to install it. Im guessing it would look like a large steering wheel puller  . So, before i get into it it and get stuck, does anyone know if i need a special tool to remove the front pump? any other info or tips would be great as i never removed a front pump before.

Just to be clear, The seal that needs to be replaced is the large seal around the pump with all the bolts about 2" apart from each other. Not the small one on the shaft.

    Thanks~Vinny

thats easy:laugh: you can get it out with a flat screw driver by prying on it by the valve body. you will have to remove the pan and maybe some of the shift linkage next to the valve body. just insert the screwdriver through the hole in the case and slowly pry it out. really simple, no special tools required. obviously you have to have the tranny out of the car though.:beers2:

You can do it that way or there are two threaded holes in the pump (3/8 or 5/16 I forget) that you can screw a small slide hammer into. There are two seals, a flat gasket and a big o-ring that goes around the outside of the pump.

That kind of what i figured guys. Thanks a lot for the info.
And when I pull this front pump out of the tranny, are there any springs or parts or lost treasures that are going to POP :eek2: out and and screw up my whole operation? Any other parts and or seals that i should change while i have it out? Should i install the front pump main seal dry or with sealer?

    Thanks~Vinny

i dont think the 400s have the threads though but i could be wrong. i usuall dont do it that way, i use the screwdriver way or if that doesnt work then i use a pump puller that clamps around the stator support shaft so i dont know for sure if they have the threads.

stand the tranny up when you take the pump out. you can put it in a 5 gallon bucket straight up. cover the torque converter seal with something and get some brake cleaner and wash away any dirt and grease so it wont get in the tranny when you pull the pump off. make sure you dont pull the input shaft/forward clutch assy. up when you pull the pump out or you may shift the clutch plates and not even realize it. then you will crush them when you put the pump back in because the input shaft wont be far enough down.

change the sealing rings and the torque covnverter seal. you shouldnt need the sealer but if you do put it make sure you dont put too much and cover the hole that goes to the seal and bushing. and make sure the garder spring doesnt come out of the seal when you install it, or when you put the converter in.

make sure the gasket doesnt move when you put the pump in. you can use some studs to align the pump and keep the gasket in place when you put it in. lube the o ring on the pump with some atf so it slides in easy. also MAKE SURE you have the thrust washer on the pump. put a little vaseline on it and stick it in place on the pump hub. put new sealing washers on the pump bolts and torque them to 18-20 ft lbs

    good luck :beers2:
