With that tail shaft housing it probably came out of a Vega. They had a weight bolted on there which I always suspected was to reduce vibration. Most likely has about a 3.50 1st gear and also the weakest of the Saginaw 4 speeds

If you had a car with less than 200 hp and a 2.56 rear it would work great. I bought one a few years ago at the Turkey Rod Run for $75.

I'm probably looking at some of his other stuff and I will see if there is a number anywhere on it. In the ad it says it was bolted to a 350 with 327 heads.

I thought those were also mated up to the 267 Chev in the Monza...

A possibility for sure. I've never had a Monza but I did have a few Vegas back in the day and they all had that tail shaft housing with the weight bolted on it. A Monza is basically the same car with different sheet metal. GM put Saginaw 4 speeds in a lot of cars under 300hp but not all of them had that tail shaft housing. They weren't a bad transmission but the higher the numerical 1st gear, the weaker they were. Find one with a 2.54 1st gear and it'll work fine in most lower horsepower applications.

I just came back from his house. He says someone else called first and if he doesn't show, it's mine. here's a pic of the trans number. It's hard to read, but it seems to be 6281888 ??6281886?? I googled both and drew a blank.
He says it was in a 68 vette small block. The paper tag also said AMX. he had one of the last models of an AMX rusting away behind the house in tricolor Red White and Blue.

Might have been in a `68 Corvette but it wasn't born there. Seems like all Chevy stuff that's for sale is from a Corvette nowadays, as if that makes it worth more money. In many cases, particularly in the mid-late 70s and early 80s the Corvette shared the same engines and transmission as all other Chevys. The old double hump heads from the 60s? Yup, all of them for sale are advertised as Corvette heads even though they came on everything. Either the sellers are misinformed or they're crooks and liars.

Typically the 3.50 was used in 4 cylinders, 3.11 V6 and small V8, 2.54 is for higher HP applications.
