What is the correct color for the black metal dash? Something like SEM Trim paint?? Thanks for any help Nelson
Nelson I have 70-72 interior trim books with all that info will get it mixed for you . I will research. It just has to look like flat lacquer
And yes if you call SEM they will give you period correct formula if you have SEM mixing colors. I do
SEM Trim Spray bombs are Awesome . But when doing larger panels it is noticeable . When spraying flat paint everything has to go perfect or your eye will catch the flaw. Remember never spray flat paint with high humidity in the air . It won't dry FLAT
I used the factory codes from Ditzler/Ppg from the GM paint chart. Why use anything else. APS tower puts it in spray bombs. You cannot tell it was from a can on my car. Upper dash needs to be 0 gloss. Lower is semi.
Absolutely . But even Bodyshops tend to lean to SEM because of the matching capability Way to many interior colors wide variety. But the dash is black. Easy
As Dave mentioned above, if you are trying to be factory correct, the upper portion at the base of the windshield is 0 gloss (flat) to reduce glare, and the lower portions below the dash pad are semi gloss. This is an often overlooked detail even on many concours cars.
ohhhh. I see what a sayin. Keep'n the Glare off the windshield. Did not know that. Thank you Gentleman
So what they are say'n Nelson . Your frame paint will pass for lower Part off Dash. the top has to be FLAT.
Original frames had more gloss than upper dash. ... Nothing worse than being in a nice restored car and having a shiny dash reflecting back at you in the glass........ As far as the PPG flat Gm interior lacquer goes I have even painted several dash pads with it with no prep other than good cleaning. The dashes look original. It is amazing how well it works. The paint bites into the material. I would not try it with any other paint.
Steve, I am just trying to answer Nelsons question and not confuse the issue. He wanted dash paint info.
How durable is the SEM paint,is it single coat, or a flat clear put over it. Need to paint my 69 Gs dash soon along with the steering column.
It is Single Stage. no hardener no reducer. All their colors are in a rattle can. But if you are particular. Go to the Paint/auto store. Have them mix it and put it in a pint can. Use spray gun. Or one of those Areosol bottles that you can put paint in. They are real nice. just clean out with thinner when your done. The reason it sprays so nice is that SEM wants you to put 1st coat on at 15psi. and 2nd coat up to 25psi . It looks like Splatter coming out. But end result is GLASSSS!
