From what I've gathered over the last 16 years on v8buick, the 72 hood scoops are supposed to be black, and not body colored like previous years. But at the same time, since the hood will be blacked out in that section, is it the same matte finish as the GSX stripe? Also, since the car is red, we have to have an ORANGE pin stripe around the black, correct? And is there any evidence of what particular orange that was? I don't trust the colors that were on this car when I got it.
On the '72 I used to own, the scoops were black, but slightly more gloss than the stripes on the hood. The red pinstripe had an orange tint to it and almost disappeared into the Flame Orange paint. This was just my car. Who's to say the next GSX done was exactly the same.
I always forget which way it goes but do remember that the 72 hood scoop inserts were different colors depending on which plant built the car. Maybe a 72 Guy can chime in. Duane
I had a '72 GS built in Flint that had black surrounds in the hood scoops. However, I was told many years ago that '72 GS built in Framingham did have body painted scoops. Not 100% positive it is fact, though.
I could be mistaken, but seems to me that my old '72 Framingham car (one repaint) had body color scoops.
Hood scoop color was determined by the plant they were assembled. My unrestored 72 GS built in Framingham was body color but my 72 GS built in Freemont were black. I also believe all 72's built in Flint were black. I have a thread where Duane explained it.
