I borrowed this from the parts store but it pops off the spring before compressing it at all. Is the spring rate of dual springs (TA 1107; 275 lb-ft) too high for this thing?

Is there an alternative removal method? I'd prefer not to buy a better tool online and wait for it to be delivered.

I have used one like yours but never tried for dual, I know retainer shape really effects it effectiveness. I have an old blank rocker shaft and a bent 3/4" wrench I have used b4

That type of spring compressor for dual springs is tricky, AND somewhat dangerous:mad:
It grabs the outer spring only, the claws aren't long enough to engage the inner spring also, so you end up compressing the inner spring by pushing down with your hand to release the retainers to grab with a magnet before the spring compressor lets go:mad::mad:
And if/when it lets go, make sure its away from your face or your caro_O
Use a lever type that uses the rocker shaft and compresses the spring by the retainer:cool:

That tool belongs in the trash heap. Borrow a c-type or TA sells a nice lever action one.

The claws aren't even long enough to really engage the outer spring! O'Reilly's and Autozone say they don't have the c-type but Advanced loaned me one.

I'll have to get the TA tool to put the inner spring back in after cam break-in
