I saw some pictures online the other day of a frame off GSX and noticed the radiator hoses were not only stamped but also had a thin white line that ran the entire length of both hoses. Also, the power steering hoses had a stripe on them as well. Has anyone ever seen this? This was a first.
Interesting I think I went to a car show last year and seen a car with these lines I'll take a look to see if I have any pictures laying around.
I don't recall thin white lines on either the radiator or power steering hoses. Going out to the car now to look at my power steering hoses because I'm fairly certain they are original to the car.
I feel like sometimes, certain restorations - while very nice - tend to get "over restored" and also use other makes as blanket examples for how things originally came.
OK, here's what I have. It's not actually a "painted" white line, it's an indented rib line that runs the length of the hose. And it's on both sides of the hose. Let me add, I do not have proof this is an original hose.
The dip stick color is completely incorrect on the picture that you posted. Look at the picture of our GSX that I posted. The master cylinder I would say is also incorrect. His throttle return spring in incorrect. It should be dark green like ours.
Ok Jim I hear ya. Any ideas were to get that throttle return spring. Also on my GS the dipstick has a red handle almost like it was dipped or something. Maybe it was exchanged at one point
The dip sticks were not there when the engine was sprayed red at the factory. Paint the throttle return spring dark green like my picture. Stretch it open a bit prior to painting and let it dry before release. I have never seen power steering hoses with those purple stripes but ask others about this.
Here are two nos hoses. The one ob the left is a bbb lower and is yellow. The other is a gto upper and is white. Sorry it's the only pic I have on my phone.
Thought I would put my two cents in. Don’t go nuts putting stripes on radiator hoses. They look too busy. Several manufacturers supplied hoses so there is no real standard. Don’t always copy the nicest car at a show. That is how the flat black air cleaner trend got going. Look at this NOS hose on my GSX. It had a very thin Guldens Mustard Yellow Brown stripe embedded right into the rubber. I have seen originals like it. I had three NOS hoses all different. The one in picture had yellow part number on it. Another I still have had white part number and GM AU and no stripe whatsoever. Another had GM part number and Goodyear markings and faint white stripe. So don’t go nuts with a stripe. The correct shape hose is not even available anymore.
As far as power steering hoses go I am not sure what that purple is all about? Some return hoses had Swan markings and date codes like mine in picture. Pressure hose may have part number on it.
This is an original 71 455 lower hose I took off a car I stripped. It has GM part number and YD code. Had word RADIATOR with arrow point to right that looks like a line. It has a Gates emblem so they were a supplier. Also has a very faint yellow/brown stripe to left that runs to top. It is very faint like my upper and about 1/16” wide and not fat like everyone does. It appears to be imbedded in the rubber. So again some hoses have it some don’t. Don’t over restore.
