    Afternoon guys.

1972 Skylark Custom I'm wondering what is the correct "Interior" for the trunk?

I currently have the felt pad if you will on the trunk floor & just a black spare tire board.

My question is this: What would be the correct set-up for my trunk? Would I put the aqua/grey hounds tooth pattern on the trunk floor & the spare tire or just the spare tire board?

Also were the hounds tooth patterns installed on all models or just certain ones?

    Thanks,

    Kyle

Originally, the trunk was painted in a black/ aqua spatter paint. The tire board was also painted in the same spatter paint with a black/ aqua rubber mat . Its not recommended to use the rubber mat as condensation develops between the mat and the trunk floor

So it seems better to just leave my felt pad & get a aqua spare tire board.

Or even get rid of the felt pad & repaint.

How do you guys keep your trunk? I want it to look good yet still be usable.

That probably the best route. I have the correct trunk mat but I just put it in for shows. A mat is fine as long as the material can breathe. How do I keep my trunk? Clean! :D If your like me and you use the car for the occasional trip to the grocery store, you want to make sure you trunk isn't all dirty and gross

Ive gone so far as to pull the plugs from the trunk drop offs, scrub the trunk floor with Simple Green and hose it out. A few hours in the hot sun with the trunk lid open dries it right up

    Thanks Jason.

Did the felt go underneath the rubber mat?

Is there a more correct version between the aqua spare tire board & the aqua whole spare tire cover?

From the factory, it was just the rubber mat, no felt. Im fairly sure that Cutlass's of the same era used a felt mat. Buick used a board. Its available reproduction from CARS in NJ. Buick never used the vinyl full tire cover but it does dress up the trunk

I vaguely remember some Buicks that had a "felt" trunk mat. You might want to take a pic and post it here. The ones I remember were die cut in the exact same shape as the rubber ones.

They also made Trunk Boards that were plain black, with no aqua speckle on them whatsoever. I had one on a 70 GSX.

    Where was your car built?

I will do that this afternoon. Seems to be glued to the trunk floor.

Currently I have the black spare tire cover.

Rubber mat had a houndstooth pattern to it. I don’t think anyone mentioned that? My 71 Stage-1 had an all black spare tire board built in Flint. I have seen both. You can leave the rubber mat in the trunk if the trunk is leak free and kept in a heated garage. Take it out for winter if it makes you happy. I never got any moisture under my mats.

That is a rubber mat that I got on eBay. Very thick and well made.

    Kyle,

The trunk setup you have in place now is correct for a '72. Many don't realize that the '72s used a felt trunk mat, not rubber like the earlier cars. The mat was not glued down but after getting damp they do stick to the trunk floor giving the impression that it is glued down. The felt mat is not currently reproduced and therefore every restored '72 that you see has an incorrect rubber mat installed. You have to be mindful to keep either of them dry or else it can lead to a rusted trunk.

The spare tire board was black for '72 just as you have yours. The base-model Skylark (like mine) came with no spare tire board installed but the upper trim level '72s (Skylark Custom, Skylark 350, GS) had a spare tire board and it was just solid black with no trunk paint on it.

I removed the felt trunk mat from my 25k mile Skylark before it became my daily driver so it wouldn't get ruined. I kept it for a pattern so I can make correct mats for our '72 GS cars if I can find a roll of correct felt material.

Here is the thread from 2004 about the 25k mile Skylark which I turned into a daily driver: http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?th...from-a-true-25k-mile-survivor-72-buick.57254/

I recently saved this photo from another thread where a low mileage '72 Skylark was being discussed that is for sale on Craigslist. You can see the black spare tire board and the felt mat in place, along with the original G78-14 spare tire.

For a felt I suggest checking Olds sites like Fusick. Could it be the same?

This 70 Stage-1 from a 1970 magazine article has the spatter board. Also the nice tri shield mat. 8EAE172B-D0C6-4415-BF8F-685F2D29B275.jpeg
