We'll my starter is history. Had it for a long time. Unfortunately my engine kicked back and destroyed it. I will set up starter saver to 12 degs instead of 20. I should've knew better . Any recommendations for a good replacement ? Thx, John B.

I have a lightweight on mine installed about 3 years ago. I'm trying to locate the name of the vendor I used and will post if I can find it. I run 13 degrees initial timing on my 10.6:1 motor and it works fine.

Have you considered running vacuum advance of 8 to 10 degrees off of full time vacuum to make up for having to reduce the initial?

Thanks Ray, should of thought of TA first thing. Just like to get people's feed back on what's the most reliable part for the money spent.

I purchased mine from someone on this board 10 years ago and it has been flawless and awesome. I can't remember his name. It was Jamie McClinton I think? Have you done a search on "mini starters"? Larry the "Wizard" I think has used him too.

You got a lot better life out of yours than I did mine. And b4 I go any farther I like the stuff dB makes a d have usedan them on plenty of other cars and boats with very little issues.

But my starter was turning over an 11:1 464 32 degrees locked out, but was pulling 20 out with my msd.....so only cranking 12. First starter only lasted 1 month.....had to replace the second one by the end of the same race season.......gave up and just put my stk starter that I bought from auto zone 20 years ago back on

I used one of Jamie's starters for many years. My new motor uses an SFI flex plate, and I found the starter would grind because it was too close to the flexplate. The back lash was fine, so shimming it was not the answer, and there was no way to adjust that clearance with the smaller GM starter. BTW, a starter for a 95 Buick Roadmaster with the LT1 Chevy motor will bolt right in. I went that route and it worked for awhile, but destroyed itself in a few months.

I then went to the Robb MC starter which I use to this day. The nice thing about his starter is it uses a mounting block like some of the Powermaster starters. You can adjust the flex plate to pinion clearance with a 1/16" round shim between the starter body and mounting block. I actually needed an additional shim which Robb sent me no charge. I also needed a 1/32" back lash shim adjustment. The starter works great now. An option with Robb's starter is a pinion support, which I opted for because I run locked out timing with the MSD crank retard.
