my fuse keeps blowing in my 71 skylark. It is the directional signal/back up fuse. I have changed all bulbs, even changed one of the signal sockets. I have went through about 20 fuses. As soon as I turn ignition on the fuse blows. When this first started the fuse would be good for 5-10min. Now the fuse blows as soon as I turn the ignition. Please help

I would start by breaking down the circuits . Find out if its the Back-up light or the turn signals are the cause . Disconnect the Back up light switch at the Neutral Safety switch which is at the bottom of the column . If that's not it try disconnecting the turn signal switch connector on the steering column . If that's not it I would separate the bulkhead connector and separate the front half of the car from the rear half .

Look in the shop manual to see if there is anything else on that circuit besides the Turn Signals and Back-up lights

Disconnect the signal harness by the steering column under the dash.Put in new fuse and turn on ignition. If the fuse doesnot blow you have a short in the switch.

For any such problem, stop buying fuses. I have a couple wires to a blown
fuse, they go to a medium (door open light) 12V bulb. Plug this into the fuse
position and it will light brightly with a short. Unplug things till it goes out,
track down the short. Sometimes a different size bulb (dash or headlight) is
used to match the situation. Bruce Roe

On the other side of the fuse box in the engine compartment is the half of the harness that does the front light . The bulkhead connector is held together with a 5/16 bolt that when you loosen it the half's separate . The bolt is incorporated into the front half and as you loosen it it makes the half's separate .

This will at least eliminate some areas to look at . You did unplug the back-up light plug from the Neutral Safety Switch too ??? I dont have a 71 Manual but a 72 manual shows power from that fuse going to the T.S. Flasher and the transmission kick down .

I will give the bulkhead a try. I will also try to locate the back-up light plug. Thanks for your help I will keep you updated.

You should start a new thread . The original poster of this one hasn't been on this site for at least 3 months. But you could follow some of the advice posted here .

I'm still in the process of trouble shooting, based on the information in this thread and a couple others that I found here. Haven't had a time to spend on the car this week. If I get stuck, I most certainly will start a new thread.

    Thank you!

And post everything about the condition as it happens . It helps figuring out which direction to go .
