Distributor gear

I'm in the process of rebuilding a distributor I got off ebay which has the correct numbers for my '72 skylark custom 350-4 and all's going well. There's no side to side play in the shaft and I bought some shims for the end play and also a new plastic washer that was very brittle when I removed it and new wires.

I think I need a new 14 tooth gear, at first glance the gear looked good to me but after closer inspection I noticed that one of the teeth has a wear mark that I don't like so I thought I'd post a couple of photos to get your guy's opinion if I should get a new one?

Also how can you tell if the vacuum advance is still good or should I just get new one?

I'm also going to get an advance curve kit so I can power time the motor.

    Thanks,

Don't take all the end play out, doing so imo contributes to gear wear, as the gear isn't allowed to find its " happy place" but instead is forced to stay in one position, whereas the cam moves a little with rpm

Thanks Hugger I didn't know that. I'm thinking there must be a spec. that has the tolerances some place. I'll check around,

Thank Alex, I just finished looking at the gear at TA performance. I might go that rout but I don't want to spend the $65.00 if I don't have to.

I just thought if it, I haven't pulled the old distributor from the motor yet maybe that gear will be in good shape.

I'm doing the change because the distributor that's in there now has the wrong numbers and before I power time it I wanted the correct one.

    Thanks

I’m sure if your gear is good it will work fine.

Thanks Jay, I've shown the gear to a couple of people that know about distributors and they think the one I have is good so I'll go ahead and use it.
