Distributor install and power timeing

I finely installed the distributor I rebuilt. The correct 1112109 for my '72 350 4 Skylark, I used the gear from the distributor that was in the car since it was better then the one the came from the distributor I rebuilt.

I read the service manual and read a bunch on this forum about finding TDC and had no problums with that other than adjusting how I inserted the distributor and allowing for the little twist when fully seated. that took a couple of time to get right.

After I had it installed I set the dwell and then timed it to factory specs the took her for a spin. the car ran better then the old distributor and idled better. New points and condenser were also installed. The car runs great!

I get the car home and start to power time it, I install two yellow springs from a Crane kit which are very week compared to the stock ones. I loosen the distributor put the car in park and since I didn't have a helper I set my engine analyzer set to 8 cylinder and my timing light set to 32 deg.

Now here's where I got a little confused, as I reved up the motor I could see the timing mark on the balancer move up then stop around 2,200rpm but if I reved it more it would continue to move up. Then it would move behind the timing deg. plate, I couldn't see the mark any more becouse it wouldn't move far enough into the timing mark area. That happen at around 4,000 rpm's. I did not turn the distributor since I was trying to figure out what was going with the timing light.

So I'm thinking I was over thinking and should have stopped when I noticed the timing mark stop the first time and not keep reving the engine. As of right now the distributor has the stock springs in it and timed to factory spec. and running fine.

Whatda think? I know I'm missing some thing. The centrifugal weights move very freely without binding.

    Thanks,

    Brad

First question is, "did you remove the vacuum advance line and plug it? Next, "are you sure your timing light is working properly?

Both good questions. the vacuum advance was disconnected and vacuum line plugged. The light I was using was an inexpensive oneI bought from Harbor freight so maybe that could be the problem. Maybe I'll try my old Sears Craftsman timing light and try making a mark on the balancer as describe in the power timing thread and see how that works.

    Thanks Guys!
