Does anybody know the correct paint color for a Star Wars air cleaner?

I bought this over the weekend thumbnail_IMG_1775.jpg , figured I would go ahead and have a friend of mine "restore" it. Is it supposed to be Buick Red, same as the engine? Anyone know the correct paint code?

    Thanks in advance,

    Chris

I think this is like the "what oil should I use" question.

Whatever engine paint red you think looks good. Duplicolor DE1653 I like.

Thanks Adam. I wanted to confirm it was supposed to be red, as it looks more of an orange now, lol

I’m sure you can find a suitable paint that is used in a gun if needed

A lot of people on here have said that the Duplicolor DE1653 is the closest to the original factory Buick red paint.

Similar project to do here. Please tell me how he manages to remove and reinstall the chrome lettering....

Take the two halves of the air cleaner body apart and undo the speed nuts on the backside of the letters, be careful not to snap the studs off.

    Thanks for the help guys.

It is in pretty good condition, just a couple of minor spots to fix and then paint. I think I responded to the CL ad within an hour or so, and it was less than hour from me. Guy sold his 67 around 1978 and has had it in the garage ever since. Even had the correct knob and base.

I didn’t need it, but too good of a deal to pass up. I guess now I have to look for a 67 to buy, lol.

    Chris ,
With your skills it will be easier finding the car than it was finding the air cleaner at a reasonable price.

So: did you see a parts car this came from or know its history? Just curious why it is so clearly orange -- did someone just not know better? Some part of a wrecked custom?

I only use Buick Red from TA. Don't like to see orange colored Buick engines. Lol

No, the guy who I bought it from sold the car it was on in 1978/79. The inside of the cleaner is pretty red, but the outside top/sides are more of an orange. I don't know if it spent time in the sun in his garage /outside and faded, or if it was repainted at one time (doesn't look like it).

Probably hung on the wall in direct sunlight for 40 years

A couple of minor items that will get fixed before the repaint. IMG_1760.jpg IMG_1756.jpg

After trying every red available locally I went with Eastwood$ ceramic red on my motor (actually was originally bought for doing a Star Wars air cleaner).
I used the “red/orange” Chevy color only on my M/T Super Comps. Here’s a picture to compare he difference.

Color could have become more orange from engine compartment heat is my guess.

Okay, that's believable. Time and heat could definitely do that.

Degreaser has a tendency to make reds turn orange
