That really took some time to put together, and thanks for posting it!!! As an ex 1962 and 1964 Impala SS owner, I have NEVER seen a 1962 bubble top before and only ONE 1961 SS348 (409?)! Was that just a California thing? COOL MAN, COOL! ws
I love those old race car photos. Thanks for posting. I am seriously considering having Wheel Vintiques build me a set of chrome reverse wheels for my `65 Skylark. I had a set on my `64 Galaxie in high school. That red `63 Barber John Impala was in Garlits museum the last couple times I was there. The Gas Ronda `64 Thunderbolt is in Milton, FL, owned by a guy named Willie Smith. It's burgundy now and has been tubbed and narrowed. He has no intention to ever restore the car to it original glory. Kind of a shame IMO.
Thanks for the Pix!! I see quite a few that were Names of the day, that have faded away, or went on to better things & made their Names Very well known. Don Nicholson, in both the early Chevy Pix, and later in the 64 Comet Wagon. Ronnie Sox in early Chevys, as well a Grumpy, & other Chevy & MoPar people. I must admit My favorites were the ones I found in the Pontiac & Ford sections, with the various Pontiacs of Don & Roy Gay in the cars from the Local Dealership. 61-2 Big Pontiacs & the 63 421 "Grocery Getter" Tempest Wagon. The original Dealership building was just torn down about 6 weeks ago. Don's Son, Shane now has the Dealership, which is Buick & GMC, along with KIA, out on I-45. The other is the Wickersham Ford #999 from Beaumont TX, Driven by Clester Andrews, who later drove their stretched 66 Mustang (similar to the Gas Rhonda A/FX car) Both the Gay Brother's are now gone, as is Clester, so most history of them is gone or going quickly. A lot of the bigger names are gone as well, so seeing this History is appreciated. JR
Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. I can hear a radio somewhere in the background..."tonight, tonight, under the lights"...
In Chicago it was SUNDAY! SUNDAY! AT BEAUTIFUL U.S. 30 DRAG STRIP WHERE THE BIG ONES RUN, RUN, RUN !!!! ws
I was 11 in '62 (until December). I remember watching some of those cars, and some very similar, run at Martin.
Great group of pictures. I remember seeing some of them run when I was much younger. I always liked the older Plymouths. I built this one for my oldest son when he was 16. It has a 440 and a 4-speed. Marv.

She was seen as a sex object due to her attire. But she was a integral part of the Jungle Jim team. I liked her more recent interview. She's still a cool gal. Who wouldn't want her on their tit crew?
Very cool article! It's amazing to see how behind the times Plymouth and Dodge were, styling-wise, and how quickly they changed......The reason there's no Buicks? Can you imagine a poor little Nailhead (especially with a Dynaflow) trying to run with a 409, 421, 413, 426, 406, or 427? If the car could talk, it'd be crying and screaming at you like a little kid for embarrassing it in front of all it's friends and the other people that were watching.....The Nailheads are cool, but sadly Buick just wasn't on the same performance planet as the cars featured until the BBB came.
This is from the Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway in Newton Co. Georgia. The track lasted into the 80s but is now a subdivision (with a really long straight entrance!). Patrick
