Preliminary autopsy on the engine in my 66 shows zero compression in #7 cylinder..Valve cover off shows #7 exhaust valve is down inside the spring. At a minimum, I will have to pull that head to see if it did any damage to the piston. Not sure how this is related to the violent overheating it experienced on the way home 2 weeks ago, and whether this is a cause or or an effect. It was 14 qts of coolant low with no signs of any leaks or other visual damage other than the radiator cap. No warning, temp was running 180, 42 psi oil pressure, cruising at 2500 RPM in high gear when I'm guessing the radiator cap blew out (shows damage) and temp gauge went to the moon. Clouds of steam coming out of everywhere under hood. So will sub in the Ramrod for Stanton and dropped out of MCACN with the 66. I'm really getting too old for this...
Modern tech. can drop a camera with light right into the spark plug hole to check the top of the piston and the walls.
Think the head will have to come off anyway if the valve is stuck, but thanks. That sounds like something that ought to be used at Pure Stock tech on some obviously bogus cars...just saying.....
Hey Dave, That's a real bummer. I know that you've been experiencing real woes with the cars lately. Let's get that one fixed, and start enjoying this hobby again. Good luck... Rich C.
Thanks, Rich. It does get frustrating all too often. Tim, I'm starting to believe that. This car hasn't been driven much since the 1980's. Had 44,300 orig miles on it when I got it in 1997; Has 44,500 on it now.
Valve is stuck open in the guide at full lift. I'm sure it hit the piston, head has to come off at a minimum. YUK.
