For those guys like me who still have points, are the old dwell tachometer meters still available? I have an old (in years, not in condition) Penske unit which I bought from Sears and now can no longer find a battery for. Even Sears says "Sorry". I tried the web sites for many battery manufactures and resellers without any luck. The 4.2 volt mercury battery has been discontinued. I've looked to buying a new one but can't find them at local auto places, Sears or Summit Racing.

Do other folks just gap the points or "tune by ear"?

Try radio shack for the battery.

Or just type in dwell tach on ebay search and you can find numerous people selling them, even new ones.

Mine is a Sun unit that does not use a battery!
I do have to hook it up to the car battery, though.

you should be able to make up a battery for that....

4x1.2v nicad cells=4.8v which should work without a problem

.....or use some small regulator circuit to turn down a 9v cell
