JW dyno'd the motor with both intakes if I remember correctly. That was the only change.

Here you go. 2 482s with the same combos. Cam,single plane intakes, flow on intake side compression, etc. Cam is hyd roller a little milder than yours. I built these for street with plenty of vacuum on pump gas.

If I had both, I would be inclined. I would also like to test an RPM Air Gap....that is if we had one o_O

Jim told me they were around 325/225 at .600"

Nice. Im hoping hp will peak a few hundred rpm before 6000

Gary, I see the dyno sheets but I have to wonder how a 482, with what you say is a smaller roller cam than 236/244, makes more HP that torque and the HP peak is above 6000 rpm. It seems to me the torque in a big cube engine with a relatively small cam should be noticably higher than the HP number, and especially not above 6000 rpm. Ultra wide LSA? Cam retarded 10*? I need some schooling on what I'm missing there.

As it is I'm going with 640 TQ and HP around 580 down around 5700. Gotta love the TQ. Too bad it is not the 1000. I'll be interested in how it holds up against the the big DP's. Won't even be a contest as far as the Q-Jet goes.

hi mike, I was wrong on the specs, not a surprise at my advancing age memory is bad. Heres the specs, 236/252 on a 113 LC, had plenty of vacuum. .632/.616 with 1.6 rockers.I love big I and E duration gaps. The carb is 1000cfm.Sometimes dyno #'s are different than whats expected, but actual experience doesn't lie. I am not too fixated on HP, I want torque, thats what moves the car. I just did another 482 tuesday again same specs as previous 2 but this time with a solid cam and on e85. Everything else the same except 11.4 compression, since e85, vs 10.8 on the previous. peak hp was 650 at 6100rpm and torque 600 ft-lb.Interesting comparisons. I am curious on his #'s.

Still setting up. Started at 10 am. Ran into lots of issues. Will hopefully get results soon 20201120_131527.jpg

Issues with the set-up? Hopefully not with the motor. o_O

Issues with setup. He doesnt do anything but race BBCs, for the most part. So it was a learning experience for both of us. Nothing fit, my engine is non-standard, had to take part of the dyno apart to get the headers to fit, etc. Started at 10 am, first pulls at 4:00. Anyways, only got partial results. Found out Qjets do not like the turbine air hat, upset the AFR big time. So only pulling to 5000, and only 30 degrees of timing, 592 ft lb, 525 hp. Still sorting things out. Will resume in the morning. Last pull made more hp than first, (with no changes)so it's prob still breaking in

If it runs as good as it looks you will be happy.

I would love to see what you gain with an SP1.

Larry, it would be about 30-35 HP for the SP1, about 40 for the SPX... with a big holley

1000 HP carb and a transition spacer would probably pick that dual plane combo up at least 10-15 HP.. that has been my experience. The vacuum reading indicates the carb is too small on that engine.

Looks about right for what your running, nice torque number..

Here is a very similar engine I built a while back..

Thanks Jim, I knew an SP1 has to make more HP than a B4B on an engine like that.

Sure makes more HP, due to pushing the torque curve up about 400 rpm.
Here is a similar engine, but with an SP-1.. this one was brought to me a week ago to see what was wrong with it.. they had a mix up with the distributor placement and the programagble ignition they were running.. this is a flat tappet cam.. TA 210 solid..

I post it not so much to compare the numbers, but where they are in the rpm range.

    Pre inspection dyno sheet.JPG

The single plane typically pushes the torque curve up.. which is often, but not always a good thing.. I build plenty of motors both ways.. if they have to have a HP number, especially at or above 600, then the single plane is the only way to go..I most often recommend the SPX.. I like the look, and it makes more power.. especially on that a serious combo.

Remember, to make more HP, one of the ways to do that is push the torque curve up.. since HP is a math equation... torque is a measured number... HP = Torque x RPM / 5252

I think what would be interesting is for you to put your Performer intake back on Larry.. and go drive the car, get a real world difference.. do some mpg stuff, and a trip to the track.. Your heavy car with a conservative converter stall might actually like the dual plane intake. Could run about the same time as the higher HP combo, if you can pick up the short time with torque..

You might be surprised... it would be interesting.

Jim, you have my attention. I actually sold my Performer with my prior engine. When I sent you my aluminum heads and intake, I put my iron heads back on along with the Performer. Sold the engine and got 3500.00 for it. I might have to buy another. I could run my GS air cleaner.:)
