I have a 71 455gs, ported heads moderate cam car was set up for strip dyno @650HP has Holley 850 car runs great no issues with fuel delivery, I was curious if I should go to EFI as opposed to carb or should I just leave well enough alone and stick with carb.
As mentioned it depends on what bugs you and what does not. For me the things that pushed me to fuel injection are listed below. 1. Tired of smelling like hydrocarbons after every drive 2. Cold start aggervation 3. Hot start aggervation (vapor lock) 4. Tune the carb for hot/cold air and it then runs lazy on cold/hot air days. If you are looking for a huge mileage increase save your cash. Don't forget to budget for new fuel lines, filters and pump. Like most things you get exactly what you pay for here. Go cheap and your garage will smell like gasoline.
So what was your final choice. I know Id like to hear. Efi is cery tempting now. This fuel has wreaked havoc on a few carbs for me. Keeps me busy every few months in disassembly clean and reepoxy. Getting sick of it and car sits longer n longer since its been a battle keeping fuel system alive
Not sure what problems you are having with your carb, but if you know you car is going to sit, add some stabil, or just add a manual shut off valve yo fuel line if mech. pump or just turn the electric one off, and run the carb empty, then try to start it a few more times and don't forget to empty the accelegato pumps. Gas is no better sitting in side a fuel injector either. As far as the my opinion to the OP, if you have no real issues now why mess with a good thing. Efi is not perfect, can take a lot of time to tune and adjust, plus it's not a cheap add on to do right. Might they take less tinker, maybe, but my 464 will knock off with just 2 pumps when it's 15 in my shop, has a 1000cfm prosystem no choke. Is idling on its one in less than a min. Doesnt smell nasty idles at 800 on a motor that runs 10.90s and only pulls about 4 to 5 inches of vaccum. But as asked, it depends on what your issues are and what your goals are, but the old saying if not broke don't fix it comes quickly to the front of my grey matter that rattles around loosely between my ears
If you don't have too radical of a cam and run a single plane intake EFI is not a bad move. You can have a EFI and fuel system for less than $2000 now. There are so many options out there and even the most basic will still support 600hp and give tons more adjustability over a carb. I love carbs, they are still tough to beat for the track. Even for the street its tough to beat a Qjet. Throttle body injection systems will not give much of a MPG change and will not make much more power. It will give you a consistent running car that is easy to maintain and adjust. Some EFI systems even look like a carb now.
