Ok , just got quizzed from a friend . He's asking if assembly lube is ok to use for a cam install . I told him I would DBL check . I just always use cam lube . I'm thinking that there is a difference , cam lube - more adhesion ? Maybe with roller lifters not a big deal ? I'm sure he just doesn't have any cam lube handy , and I'm not sure about what he's working with .
You don't need any lube other than a coating of engine oil with roller lifters, but if it's a flat tappet cam I always use actual cam lube anymore, especially if it has a high lift/stiff valve spring combo. If it's a stock type low lift build I've used Lubriplate in the past, but just to cover my a$$ I'd be getting some real deal stuff. Flat lobes are no fun.
We just coat the lobes with engine oil (no need for the lifters to spin or take a set to the lobe like a flat tappet cam), on the journals a thin coat of assembly lube will be just fine, Del.
Brad Penn SAE 30 wt. Break -in (Green oil) Will set you FREE. But not sure if necessary on Rollers. Flat tappet. Ohhhh Yeahhh.
If it's a roller lifter engine, just use GM EOS. No need for the old school "cam lube". All that does is help keep the lifters spinning during break in.
When I use roller lifters I ALWAYS soak them in oil overnight to get oil in between ALL the internal roller bearings. Tom T.
Didn’t the cam company give you lube? Everyone I ever bought did. Don’t use it and warranty will void.
