For a concours resto using the original style exhaust manifold studs and lock wahers what is the correct stud color---

    Cast iron gray?

    Barbeque black?

Since these manifolds were not painted originally but now in restos we paint these manifolds cast iron, you see the studs oftentimes cast iron.

But, But that would have been a very unusual finish for studs then or now. Most of the time they would have been either silver zinc cad, a gold cad, or black but not cast iron.

Perhaps I have some NOS ones coming so maybe I will know the answer sometime after Xmas. Until then what do you say?

    Jim,

The NOS ones I have for Henry's motor are black oxide.

And unfortuantely for the rest of you, the only way they are leaving this building is in the side of Henry's motor.. sorry for the tease telling you I had some. Or did you find some others? He has three of the lengths (the most common ones) and he may have some left over when we are done, which will be returned to him, and he may sell them.

The challenge for me is to find some nice enough ones so I can have them oxided, so they all will match on his motor. I am going to have to research this issue, to see if I can find this bolt/washer combo out there somewhere.

Don't know where Henry got them.. prolly at a swap meet I would guess.

Found some. There are 4 lengths and a stud as I read the book. I am a little uncertain about the stud even though I have removed a set recently.

I have some I purchased from GM about 10 years ago and they are black oxide as well. The source is gotta be out there somewhere. I'd be curious to know if you find out anything, Jim.

Me as well....mine are beyond saving...might just have to go with aftermarket style bolts, at least they are fresh and new, if not correct.
