    Car Craft, I think.
I worked for the foundry that cast the heads and blocks for those, along with about every performance manifold Chevy ever sold. :TU: Winters, Canton, Ohio. No relation to the quick change outfit.

They tested the ZL1 Camaro, 427 Chevelle, and 427 Camaro, all in consecutive months...and even threw in a 427 Biscayne along the way...

    Brian,
None that I'd ever admit to! If you ever see me running a 427 aluminum Y Block you might have some suspicions though.I'll make sure to run points though!!

I talked with the organizers today and they are still reeling from the event!

They are talking of turning up the wick on this event to make it a 3 day! They are also talking like they want the F.A.S.T./ FS ranks to show up with more cars and making them a MAJOR part of the event. Not wanting to make baby steps, they want at least 30-40 cars from our ranks to show. They will have a date for this event by the end of the month.

More people in the stands and along the fence than I have ever seen at this track. Looked similiar to national events from the 70's. I will keep everyone envolved and informed.

I woulda liked some more passes as well (I should've been on time! LOL!!), but...unless it's a dedicated track day with just Pure Stock or FAST cars , then we're never gonna be able to hot lap like we do @ Martin or Stanton. The cost of the track & insurance is gonna force us to have to tag along with another event to help offset the cost...and with that many cars, it's gonna cut down everyone's track time. Heck, with the 150+ cars at Stanton, there was a pretty good wait in the staging lanes at all times...

I missed Friday and part of Saturday...was it open track time, or did y'all have to wait for them to call you, or...????

We're running into that with the Olds powered races. Not enough cars to justify renting the track (especially for two days) and people just can't afford to spend $500-$1000 for a weekend to get only a few passes in.

Only way it seems to work is with a Big deep pocket sponsor backing you up. Dick Miller does that at Norwalk, and Joe Mondello is back sponsoring the other Olds Nationals, this year at Indy (last weekend). Or Year One/Eaton for the FAST race (and a mess of Factory Stockers to get the car count up).

Norwalk has lines in the staging lanes (mainly because of the number of cars (300-400) running, and has some waiting. They release the cars one lane at a time, so you don't have to keep restarting and moving up. Once you start up, your lane clears pretty fast. I haven't been there, but I hear the Englishtown races are like that from others. Year One did a good job at Commerce the year I was there by calling up the group and running us off quickly. Beaver Springs did the same at the York Reunion/Nostalgia Nationals.

Standing around in the staging lanes on a hot day is no fun. Good for the spectators as all the cars are in one place, but a pain for the drivers. Don't get to see any other racing than the cars ahead of you from the burnout box, and spend all day in the staging lanes.

We're trying to get another Olds race going at Byron, Ill (where Mondello used to sponsor the race), but can't afford renting the track ourselves with only 40-50 cars. End up running along with a bunch of others (this year with the SVT Ford pickup club and 200 motorcycles). Few long distance haulers will do that again for a part time race with only 3-4 runs all day.

Gas prices sure have caused us to curb a lot of our fun at least on this. :(

More like 450 cars... I talked with them and they were anticipating as such for next year--Friday 2-3 runs, Saturday 2 test-n-tune and 2 qualifying, Sunday eliminations. I will keep everyone updated.

Jim really impresses me with his short times, as well as his over all performance. I want to be like him when I grow up.

I need to get my buddy to get his F85 W31 runnin' so he can come and play. I told him that guys are getting crazy 60ft. times on the repro bias plied tires.

    Matt:

The best part of the bias plies is they still pull hard when spinning assuming you don't totally blow them away. If they do spin it's easy to throttle back and they hook very quickly. Once the radials spin it's like on ice. You almost have to put your foot on the brake to get them to stop spinning to get going.
The big torque cars (almost all big blocks) can easily blow them away and the bias ply tires seem to do much better there.

I wouldn't look to see any real low 60 footers with a stock W31, and other than wheel hop, there isn't usually a traction problem. They don't have a lot of torque on the low end, it's that hard pull from 300 foot on that usually distinguishes a stock W31. HP is very impressive from 3000-6500 once it you get into that power band.

Best we ever saw with one was mine at 1.90 at Norwalk when I had the small Crane 284 cam in it and launched at 4000. Unfortunately that combo ran out of steam at the 1000 foot mark and I watched the freight trains go right on by. Would be a great 1/8 mile setup. The stock W31 cam was good for 2.0's but pulled hard the entire 1/4 mile.

I was bogging and nosing down at Indy launching at 4000, and finally got it to go up and stay up with a 5000 launch on the final run. 60 footer dropped back into the 2.0's from 2.1-2.2.

Love to see another W31 out there. Detweiler will never run his. It is awfully nice. But then again, so is his green W30.

What better place for an Oldsmobile highjack pic!
