A wise man once said "Universal fit universally doesn't fit anything until you make it". I've found few truer words spoken. Prepare for some tank modifications (just a guess, but its an educated one fwiw....). I looked at those, the aeromotive phantoms, and the holleys, and decided the tanks inc with the necessary provisions was worth it since I'd be dropping the tank anyway. I'm sure it won't be rocket surgery, but don't expect to bolt it in the tank and go. All that said, the juice will be worth the squeeze, at least it was for me.
Well I’ve got everything installed and running. Took me about 4 days to get it installed...not 4 hours as advertised. I ended up cutting a hole in my tank to drop the fuel pump in. I thought the unit replaced the sending unit for some reason...but it was simple. Cut a 4.5” hole, cleaned up the tank and dropped it in. The kit did not include fuel lines or fittings so lost some time waiting for them to arrive only to find that the 25 ft of hose wasn’t enough. So I had to wait another day for another AN fitting to arrive to extend the return line about 3 ft. It’s recommended to solder the electrical lines...so I did that and shrink wrapped the extensions.... just kinda took my time and did things right. I ran into an issue getting it started. I called tech support and they said that I shouldn’t use the timing control feature for the initial start up. I wish the instructions said that because I had already fabricated distributor lock out tabs and wired everything for timing control. When I finally fired it up it was surging like crazy...350-1300 rpm. So I once again called tech support and they had me adjust the PWM setting to 74 and it was fixed. IT RUNS GREAT! No more stinky exhaust or hard starts. Fires right up and idles perfect immediately. Very satisfied so far...although I have driven it yet. Here are a few pics: Now I can continue with my paint and body project!
I got my impala fired up Man starts right up Hopefully will cruise it to the Steve McQueen car show today... Easy installation My thing was to try and hide everything
Not at all. Very helpful. The wait time on my second call was about 15 minutes. But the techs were very knowledgeable and got right to the point.
Yeah routing the fuel lines was a pain. And my battery is in the trunk so running the power line and drilling tiny holes and putting tiny grommets in them was more challenging than it should have been.
My battery is also in the trunk I got the power from the starter. I need to play with my kick down cable for the 2004R. Also all of a sudden the valves are ticking that's weird everything was fine before
You could not put fuel pump hanger where old sender was? What about clearance for fuel lines to floor pan? Does it have a sender built in? In line filter?
No, you still have to use the old sender because the new unit doesn’t have one. So you have to plug the old lines from the sender. Clearance wasn’t an issue. The height is about the same as the sending unit. You have the option of not using the red ring to save space. This kit did not come with an in-line filter...I had to purchase that separately also.
My install was pretty much smooth and simple. I spent most of my time running the lines nice and neat and trying to hide my wires the only thing was my coolant sensor had to be mounted on the intake which I didn't want but since I have the camel hump heads there is no port on the head. My valve ticking noise is from the rocker arms slightly hitting the valve covers... Before I was running a stud to hold down valve cover and now I'm using a bolt so when I really tighten down on it rockers are hitting it weird.
I think it was me who suggested he do it that way. I even referenced you when I did it. Couldn't find that picture of your HEI with the lock out plate. Did we lose it with photobucket?
Sure did Larry and I appreciate it. I thought it to be easier making 2 as opposed to one piece. I did want to ask...there’s no harm in removing the weights, right?
