Finally had a chance to take the car out on it's maiden voyage last week. Tested the brakes prior to heading down the hill to fuel her up. After filling up the tank and taking a few pics, we headed out for a drive. I'd guess we put about 10 miles in and the car made it back under it's own power. Success! Still need to tweak a few things and put some trim back on the car before I run her down the road again. I'd like to finish breaking in the rear end before really beating on her but can already tell this thing is going to fly. The iPhone video quality wasn't that great once I uploaded it to my computer so here are a few pics for now. I'll get some better video next time out.
How much clearance do you think you have with the K&N air cleaner? Do you think the Star Wars air cleaner would fit under your hood? Was the carburetor mounting flange on your intake manifold milled down at all, and if so, by how much? And who built your headers, BTW? Thanks, Mike Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Mike, I'm not sure how much clearance there is between the hood and air cleaner but I know it's not enough to fit the Star Wars unit. I think it would be a huge restriction of air anyhow. Carb mounting flange was not milled at all but I know George had his done on the Black Widow car. When I looked at doing that to mine, it didn't appear there was much you could take off. The accelerator pump is real close to the intake as is. Headers are the 2" TA units that they sell for the 64-67 body style. The clearance is amazing. No modifications needed to fit them in the car.
Thanks for the info Peter. I was shocked when you mentioned that you could fit a SP1 w/carb and air cleaner under the stock hood. I've read comments on this board where folks have had issues packaging an Edelbrock B-4B on the '67, and the SP1 is supposed to 1-1/2inches taller. I run my Star Wars AC with a Purolator A42318 filter. It is 3-1/2in tall so the base is separated from the lid. I have been looking at replacing the Purolator with a K&N filter for a Honda (that is 3in tall if I remember correctly) that should work with the Star Wars AC. I purchased a set of MT headers years ago and based on some of the remarks if read it looks like I'm gonna need to do some significant rework to get them to work in my '67. I installed the dipstick after I got the headers coated. The pictures you are looking at were during the mockup phase. Just worked slowly and bent the dipstick tube in my tubing bend. Not a big deal...
So how’s the Buick running after a few years? Is there anything that you woulda done differently? What transmission did you put behind that monster engine? What rear end/gears? Have you had it to the track? How’d it run? If I may also ask what size tire are you running in the rear? What width/backspacing wheel are you using? The largest wheel/tire that I could fit on mine (even after rolling the fender lip) is 255-15s on a 10in wide wheel with 6in backspacing.
