I had started a thread a while back concerning finishes for the various underhood components. I believe that thread got whacked by the hacker event.

I went through my original spreadsheet and did many updates based on additional observations of my own car and the input of others here on this board. I thought I'd repost it to get the information up there again. I also have pictures of some of the markings that I'll repost tonight.

There was a lot of great information and pics posted in that original thread. I recall input from Duane, TimR, Jim Lore, and, I think, Brad Conley. If you guys care to add any information, please do. I thought this would be useful to guys (like myself) trying to recreate the factory look.

Note: Don't hold me liable if any of it is wrong! Most of this is from my own observation and from the obersvations of others here on the board. As new information becomes available, it'll be added/changed accordingly.

Ken Thanks for bringing this thread back.... :beer

Thanks for the list, Ken. I wonder how much these things changed from year to year and plant to plant. I'll use this list this week to guide my painting the 65 Wildcat front end; lots of it looks the same. Already messed up the brake backing plates :Dou:

Your welcome guys. Use it at your own risk as I'm sure plant to plant differences, model to model, and year to year differences are not represented there. The list is primarily for a Flint built GS, in my case a '71.

I'm also hoping that if there's errors or additions some of the guys will chime in.

It's not a restoration, it's an archaeological dig!

One thing I discovered was that a tire crayon is what looks like what the factory used. So far,I've tried it on my Stage 1 and had excellent results.

Tire crayons are available in two colors-white and yellow.

    Thanks Carl for the update.

This brings up a question that I don't think was answered before in another thread- Should the code (43 B on my Limemist Black vinyl top car) behind the voltage regulator be white or yellow? I just did a quick search and I think that thread was blown out too.

On my car it looks white-ish, but I'm not sure if it changed from the heat. The code over the booster is clearly yellow on mine. Anybody want to give a definitive answer?

If I recall from that other thread, "D" above the booster stands for disk brakes; "C" stands for clutch. I recall Duane and Brad stated some additional code letters, some of them rather obscure. Would you guys mind relisting them here?

If I recall correctly, "M" for manual drum brakes and nothing (default) for power drum

    Ken,

You might want to add radiator core support bushing tops as yellow. The driver side one is visible.

At least on a 70 the steering box cover bolts are not black but a cast gold just like the steering coupling pinch bolts. They have the letter "N" in the top. I have some extra and thay are all the gold color. The bolts that mount the box to the frame are black. I will take a close up and post it .

Of course, a 71 could be different. Before you accept black take a brass tooth brush and clean the top of yours.

The letter "P" stood for power drums.

So, to summarize, over the booster the options are:

    P - Power Drum
    M - Manual Drum
    D - Disc Brakes

    An additional letter could be:

    C - Clutch

    That it?

    Bill-

I'll post the bushing colors in the list above. Thanks. :TU:

I could swear that in the big thread on this subject not too long ago that the statement was that there was no letter at all for power drums, because that is what most cars had, and it was kind of an "unless indicated otherwise" situation.
    Was I dreaming????

    Nicholas-

I do remember Brad and Duane going back and forth, I believe, on this issue. My recollection is that Duane had an example of a "M" coded car. I can't remember if he had a pic or not. Maybe one or both will chime in??? :Do No:

    Ken,
The picture I posted was from a non-numbers 70 Stage 1 4-speed car we cut up. It was done before the microfilm was found so there was no proof as to what it actually was. Here is the picture, it clearly shows the "PC"

Here's a pic that shows what's left of the black paint on the center link. Couldn't tell you what finish it was originally. satin? semi? :Do No:

You can also see an original cotter pin that was made of copper. Duane sells these. These were used on Flint cars only, I recall Duane telling me.
