Im getting close to that point in my assy. of my engine, Im mocking that part up and checking today, I'll report back
looks like ill be in the same boat if I get a set. only thing I would be worried about is that the rod now become weaker because of clearancing.
the amount removed to make clearance does not effect the strength. I do suggest that people degree in the can when they do the mock up and not only make sure the rods clear where the cam will be set but also at a few degrees advanced and retarded. That way if you ever get a worn timing set and or change the degree setting on your cam it will still clear. The bolts need to be trimmed too, but don’t over heat them when you cut them. I would get the cam installed, mock up the rods and pistons, check clearance and mod the rods to clear, take the pistons off and have the assembly balanced then... the rods need to be separate from the pistons to do a proper balance in the fixture. If you look at the Molnar rods compared to my Herche rods you can see the larger shoulder on the rods.
They are I beam style Herche custom rods, $1295 but they need a whole bunch of people interested before they will make another run...I have 3 sets here, they are nice. gary Herche actually worked with Tom Molnar to have a mass produced low cost rod. Molnar just did a slightly different design (H beam) and it needs clearancing onmmosg combos. I would still say the Molnar rod is plenty strong.
