I want to remove the mono front speaker from my'71 GS which doesn't look hard but, the center A/C duct is in the way. When I remove the two hex screws holding the duct to the dash, it still doesn't want to come out. It there something else holding it into the A/C box? Also, what are you guys using for a dual voice coil (stereo) replacement for the factory mono speaker? It will have to fit with the Center A/C duct back in place.
The duct you are removing has 2 arms that screw into the bottom of the dash. At each end there is a hose that is held on by a spring ring. one goes on the AC box, the other over to your LH vent. Be careful removing it as sometimes those hoses tear. You should be able to undo one end without having to do the other. Then remove your radio and you should be able to get to the speaker.
No, Fred. I'm familiar with the end ducts but, the one I'm talking about is the one in the middle. There is no flex tubing going to the middle. This plastic duct goes directly into the air box below. I can remove the two screws you see in the picture but, still can't pull the duct out.
rKammer - I just removed my center speaker today on my ‘69 as a matter of fact. You’ve definitely done the right thing by taking the dash pad off. When I pulled the top duct out of mine the other end was wrapped with a rubber insulation that stuffs down into the main duct box and seals the two ducts. Maybe yours is stuck down in and it just needs popped loose with a little more effort. Somebody should verify me for your year, but mined was just a matter of wiggling that end out, with the insulation as the resistance. Good luck.
I took a blown original center dash speaker and cult out the center and mounted 2 side by side 3.5 co ax in the old frame and bolted back in. Stealthy and treat sound.
I did finally get the center air duct out. I've removed the original speaker and am replacing it with a dual coaxial speaker that mounts on the same type frame as the original. So, I'll have stereo up front with two 6 x 9s in the back to play my converted factory radio through. I had converted with modern AM/FM stereo plus USB, AUX inputs and a sub woofer output. I'll be installing it this coming week.
