Glide-away tail gate explained

Purchased a few Buick press releases of the 1971 New York Automobile Show:

 

My parents had a 71 Chevy wagon with one of those hide a way tailgates. The tailgate was cool the car was a POS. the car would pass everything but a gas station. BB chevy. the car leaked water like a sive. We had the empty the water from the ashtray. We sold it after one trip from Michigan to South Carolina. Traded it on a 69 225.
