I am dry fitting the Dougs into the Street Sleeper on an old engine so I can get the exhaust pipes fit and headers installed before the new engine is ready to go in. The mock engine is in, headers bolted on but I can not get the drivers side motor mount bolt through the frame pad as the engine mount wont seat because the #1tube is interfering with the back top corner of the frame pad. The passenger side bolt did pass through with a touch of persuasion.

I am using motor mount holes #2 and #4 or the back set on the block.

Anyone running Dougs Headers on 70 GS / Skylark have to clearance the #1 tube and #2 tube for fitment?

#1 tube is blatantly interfering with the frame pad such that the engine wont seat all the way into the pad.

#2 is just kissing the top of the motor mount.

I am just wondering if anyone else had this exerience or if it is just an anomoly with this set of headers?

    Thanks..

I don't have any experience with this particular set of headers, but its typical of most of them. Are your engine mounts sagged out? Remember, the ball peen hammer is your friend

    Hi Jason,

Like the title of this thread? GOLF? My cut and paste had its own ideas I guess....

Anyway, I dont think they are that old at all, but who knows it could be the quality these days is quwaaaaaap. I have noticed on some mounts not being consistent over thje past few yuears, one plaoin didn't fit it was so skewed....... I was thinking of getting a new set and see if it made a difference.

I am not ascared of the ball peen clearance device but I was curious if it was symptomatic of something else. I have never had to clearance for motor and frame mounts before, but never had Dougs either.

My M/Ts had to be "clearanced" because they were hitting one of the square bosses on the block. Gotta love beating on a set of headers with a hammer after you just paid $550 for them

I thought we called it massaging? I paid $800 for my M/t's
well I massaged mine like a veteran thai masseuse. the first whack is the hardest. Done right there's a happy ending :eek2:

Would spacing the headers outward from the heads help in any way?

Yes, I should have mentioned that they are fit now on the heads without a gasket, and REMFLEX is what I have but that will only move it out about 1/8" so it should take care of the pass side but the drivers side is still likely going to be touching and I dont want that resonance in the frame. As it is there is good clearance between the steering shaft so can't do too much more spacing or the BPH will have to touch a visible spot, but that seems like a common mod.

BPH for final fitment as needed is the plan for under side clearance needs....just hate to whack that jet hot so I will try to pad it to at least keep from metal to metal but whats the difference once it stretches?

I was thinking you could make a spacer plate or use a header flange as a spacer if the REMFLEX is not enough.

Happy ending or no tip right?

I took the BPH to the headers today for finish fitment adjustments. I actually had to tell them as I cocked back with the intent of inflicting the first blow.." this is going to hurt me more than it will hurt you....."

Still hard to know why they don't fit them and make the necessary accomodations since it is the motor mounts and frame pads for goodness sake; not like a one off customization job here...

    Oh well, fit and finished...happy...:TU:
