I bead blasted my air cleaner at work but the color of the plastic pieces are really dull. Can anyone help me picking out the right color black and where to purchase it? Also can we paint the plastic pieces to make them look more shiny because the color doesn't look right? Is there some kind of enamel paint? I found a few threads, but none of them had depont paint can numbers or anything like that. Thanks Joe

Also, what color black paint would I use for the steering wheel mounting hub?
    Thanks Joe

Hello, most people don't blast the plastic parts for this very reason, they get too dull (depending on the media you use). You should be able to (w/some elbow grease) shine up the plastic parts with finer and finer steel wool then they'll darken up a bit when you spray clear over them. Most guys spray the metal part w/semi gloss black (many discussions on gloss vs. semi etc in forum here) don't know any specific paint numbers, Tom

What type of clear do you spray the plastic pieces with. Is there an engine temp clear you can buy?

No clear... just raw plastic like from the factory

Unless your getting judged...which most of us aren't...I painted my plastic air cleaner parts for my 69 vert with "PLASTI-KOTE" TRUCK & SPORT UTILITY paint. 11oz can. The part number is #1543. Charcoal Gray. It has a real nice shine to it and as far as I'm concerned it matches the original look almost perfect. In fact it might be even better than original for color.
Now on my GSX Stage 1 air cleaner plastic...I just used some 0000 steel wool and then cleared it.
I have attended tons of car shows and cruise-in's and no one has ever yet commented " Hay I see you didn't do your Air Cleaner Plastic the right color".
If you're trying to impress a judge (not Pontiac)...that may be a different story. But even they may miss it!

Thanks Eric that sounds great. Do you know where I would beable to purchase this paint? Also does anyone know what is a good durable paint for my gs steering wheel hub? Also what primer is best for these air cleaners?

NO NO NO on Semi gloss black. All those air cleaners were painted gloss black. Even Electras, Skylarks etc. 70-72. I have originals and they are all gloss balck. I don't know who started the semi gloss black thing anyway?

Try any good spray bomb primer like Dupli Color black primer and Gloss Black Duplicolr It works fine.

Steering wheel hub would be satin black. Try same brand

Sounds good fellas. I'm gonna try the gloss black and use some steel wool for the plastics. I'll try and post some pics.

I'm confused?...are you talking about the plastic part of a GS Air Cleaner or the metal part? Or maybe both? The metal part should be Gloss Black although I used Rustolium Satin Black on the metal part as I just like the look better than the Gloss Black. The Rustolium Paint takes 24 to 48 hours to dry but looks better than Krylon. But the plastic bak-a-lite parts were not black.
And where can you get the Plastic-Kote paint. Well...Most auto part stores in Portland Oregon carry it, so I would think if you check out a bunch of auto parts stores in your area someone must carry Plasti-Kote. If not Baxters Auto Supply in Portland carries it. Or you could look up Plasti-Kote on the internet and ask them who is the nearest dealer to your zip code.

Thanks Eric. There's an auto part store here in Morgan Hill that carries it. I'm gonna try a using steel wool to see how it comes out, but if it doensn't look that good I am gonna get the Plastic Kote.

Not to be picky Eric as your Air Cleaner looks nice but the Keep your GM car all GM sticker on the side is the correct one for a 70-72 Olds Ram Air Air cleaner if you care. Buick Codes usually began with B. Correct code for 70-71 GS is BC. 72 used another I am not sure of.

Hi Dave...You got me?! I ordered a couple of those stickers a few years ago from Year One from their catalog for my 69 convertible so if its the wrong one then YEAR ONE is selling the wrong one.
I just looked it up again in the Year One catalog and they list it as Part#MCR159...for 69 Buick convertibles. They list another one Part#DB341 for 69 GS 350 and 400 models. So...what do you think...which one is the correct one Dave?
    Sincerely, Eric :3gears:

Eric, they probably got them from Jim Osborn reproductions, which have their own issues. Is this for a GS400 ? The BC 6484022 decal was Originally Black, but they are selling them as the current White like the one you have shown. Same story with the BC decals they should be 6485517, and they made a Huge error batch of 6485516... what can you do ? And have no plans to make the correct decals.
Here is the Original Black decal/
