Ok, Thank you. A guy I know is going to look at this one on Friday. 1970 GSX 42,000 miles 60,000 price tag. He is not familiar with V8 Buick. Was trying to get him some info before he goes to look at it. Being kinda green myself I did not know how to verify this car for him. How does one go about checking with Mr. Roberts?
One very easy trick. Is it Yellow? Check trim tag for QQ paint code. Only a Yellow GSX can have a QQ paint code, white will be 10 10. Only problem with white is any non GSX can be 10 10 as well. It sure cuts down the possibility it is fake however.
Wayne Roberts: 248-879-2113 Only real way to verify 100% is with documentation. Trim tags can be counterfeited. If you know the cars really well you can spot a clone but without that knowledge I would opt for documentation. Does the owner have a build sheet by chance? Window sticker?
Since the 70 GSX cars were built in the second half of the production year (Feb-June), the sequential build number would probably be above 200000, so there is some hope. Some information here (scroll down) http://www.buickgsx.com/ From the above site, "15. From the information gathered through the GSX registry VIN numbers range from approx. 446370H120000 to 446370H335000. Some of the VIN numbers are within 30 of each other but most of them are stand alone numbers. 16. From the information gathered through the GSX registry the cowl tag numbers range from approx. ST 70 44637FL1 175000 BDY to ST 70 44637FL1 288000 BDY. Some of these numbers are consecutive and seem to be in groups of 20 to 40 but with the few cars that are in the registry it is very difficult to get exact."
If you have a set of dial calipers then you can measure the truck lid spring on the GSX and it will be larger than a regular 70 GS
I may never see the car. The guy lives about 80 miles from me. My son-in-laws uncle is the restoration expert and the guy uses him to assess cars he wishes to purchase. He travels with him when he buys and sometimes the car is brought to their shop here near to me but, if it doesn't require any touch ups or upgrades it goes straight to storage in Eastern Kentucky.
I can not stress the QQ or 10 10 paint code enough. I know it can be faked but that is rare. All the fake GSX's I have seen and I have seen a lot just don't have those tags. They always have another paint code or the tags are just gone. Most people that fake these are just idiots.
Agreed - It needs to have the Q Q paint code. It is a GS455 built in Flint which is a good start and it is within the range .
