Nope Unfortunetely they dont, or I would have done it by now. I think our best alternative (Ive got a 340 too in my 66 LeSabre) is postons. They make them for the 340 skylark, but they told me u could modify them to fit in the lesabre. I'll probly be doing that myself. Joe
Does Postons really have 340 headers in stock? I've seen so much misinformation about this for years. Has anyone actually bought them from Postons within the past five years?
Yes Postons does have headers for the 340, Ive called them about them. Havnt bought them yet but I am planning too. Joe
But did they say "in stock, ready for immediate shipment"? They've been known to take orders and not tell a guy they don't know when they will have stuff in stock. 340 headers are likely a very rare sale for them.
ha ha ha i got my headers from postons and put them in and didnt fit with out some modifications and i called them back january 9th 2004 and he said they made another run of 50 sets and has only sold ten sets so they still have 40 sets left but i feel after hearing my headers when they were still open it was worth it to me i hope noone else has so much trouble gettin them in i still have to modify them to get it right JOSH.
Sorry to hear you've had so much trouble with the fit. It amazes me that they can't design something to easily fit an engine that was produced for only two years and without any significant evolutionary changes. You would think that if they had just gotten the header prototype to fit well on any 66-67 A-body (or B body) with the 340, there would no individual complaints and probably more sales. I wonder how they fit on the 300, since they are sold for both engines? Just my opinion, I would like them, but not with a serious hassle.
A question for Myred340? Hi there to all, I called Poston (credit card in hand) and asked if the headers for the 340 would fit in my 340 2door LeSabre 1966, and the guy said "no they won't fit, they were designed for the "A" body car". Please could you tell me how much work and what you had, or have to do to get them to fit in the LeSabre. I would normally just buy a set and work it out when I get them , but I am in Scotland UK and will have to pay $200 postage, import tax? and VAT (UK sales tax) at 17.5%. I would be grateful if you could tell me what you had to cut, weld, modify on the headers and on the car body, if you don't think it causes any problems, I'll buy a set, let me know. My car is a column shift automatic, cheers Louis
well i put them in my 4 door skylark with a 340 i had to drop the tranny because i didnt have cherry picker any more un bolt engine lift it up on side at time to get them in then i have to move porportion block ding them to clear steering rod then on pass side i han to heat and push in tube that comes off no 6 cylinder then number 2 pipe hit upper a arm had to ding it to clear had to reem holes bigger number 8 so i could bolt them up it was a pain in --- but i like them i would of thought they would fit better for the cash and postons didnt seem to want to take them back be fore i modified them so i had no choice i put them on im not satisfied with what i had to do to get them to worki hop i dont run in to any more troubles but yeah right hope this dont scare you to much. josh
Louis, You may want to consider what advantage you will gain by getting headers. There was a post I read about two years ago (perhaps on the BPG email list) by a guy who had worked on and modified many 340's. His point was that the 340 exhaust manifolds were very efficient. If that's the case, and you want to install a FlowMaster or other exhaust system, then just have a local shop make connector pipes from the manifolds to the exhaust system.
HI thanks for the info Hi, thanks for the info, that sounds like a real nighmare to get them on the car!!(that they are made for!), I might give them a miss for now!. I had read about the factory manifolds flowing very well, and at the moment I am rebuilding the car, but have made a 2 and a 1/2 inch dual system with straight through boxes. One of my manifolds was broken in two, between cylinders 4 & 6, but I know a guy who can weld cast iron and have had it repaired, so it will do for now, I just liked the idea of tube manifolds sliding on to my system, though it would look good. I find it very hard getting used parts over here in Scotland, and the shipping on a used pair of factory manifolds from the States is about the same as the shiping for tube headers(ligher weight), thanks again for the replies, I will post some pictures when I get a bit more done. Any of you guys know where I can get body repair panels?, I need rocker panels and lower rear quarter panels (both sides). As far as I am aware my LeSabre is a 1966 GM 2 door "B" body car, and shares the same body as pontiac Bonneville and possibly an impala, any ideas?, cheers Louis
Lesabre would be the equivalent of a Pontiac Catalina or Impala body. The rockers may work, but the sheetmetal like the quarters was all different...I doubt any is interchangeable... Aaron
I'm going to read off the "B" bodies as listed in the 1966 Body by Fisher Service Manual: Chevrolet Biscayne, Belair Pontiac Bonneville, Grand Prix Oldsmobile Jetstar, Starfire Buick LeSabre, Wildcat That being said, it is unlikely that sheet metal will interchange due to different styling. But a Hollander's Interchange Manual for that year may show some possibilities. On the postive side, chassis items like shocks and joints will interchange.
Well I ordered a set from postons last night, with the bare shipping of $22. I wont be putting them on til spring, and will have the help of my cousin, a mechanic who had to modify headers for his 66 skylark because it had a chevy 427 in it and he needed to modify alot. Hopefully it wont be to bad but I'll let u know how long it takes to get them. Joe
300 headers Hey guys i bought a brand new set of headers from a guy on the board that bought them but never put them on any ways i put them on the passenger side went right in. The driver side was a little diffrent a had to lift the engine and move the portion block to a diffferent place then redo a couple brake lines. All in all it wasn't that painful. I didn't have to bend any tubes or ding anything. And as a matter a fact the fit really well the they up tight against the floor and cleared everthing. I had a harder time putting headers on my buddies small block chevy in a 79 cammaro. Any ways i haven't really driven the car yet but it is obvious that the engine breathes better. I can se and hear this in the throttle response the car has. So i think there is a little more bennifit than people are letting on. thanks Adam
Yea I hope mine arent too bad, but like I said my cousin will be helping out and he had to put some in his skylark, with the 427 chevy so Im sure he could get this to work. I'll let you guys know in 2 1/2 months. Joe
Well I ordered my headers from postons on Tuesday the 13th of January, and I did not do overnight shipping or anything special, just the cheapest ground shipping ($22). I got the headers today, Monday January 22. Was faster then I expected, they look pretty good. Just wanted to let you know I got them, and in April I'll let you know how they come out. Joe
300/340 headers Joe & Pat, Just a heads-up. The 66 lesabre being a "B" body has the centerlink of the steering linkage to the rear of the front frame crossmember. Just be aware that as the header exits the head and turns down to the collector that the steering linkage could be a problem area. In addition, the driver side header could possibly interfere with the steering box. Hopefully these areas will not impact the installation. Good luck! Let me know how it turns out. Tom:TU:
