One of the low beam lamps on my '72 Skylark is intermittent. The problem appears to be in the connector. If I hold the connector just right, everything works great. That isn't a practical solution, however. The problem is either a corroded contact or loose crimp/wire, I believe. I would like to slide the contacts out of the connector so I can take a closer look. Are the contacts removable? If so, how? If not, I suppose the solution is to cut the wires and install a new connector. Thoughts or suggestions welcome. P.S. I naturally dropped one of the screws that retains the lamp ring. It disappeared. I also need a replacement lamp ring. It appears that one of the ears broke off sometime in the last 10-20 years.
Yes, the contacts are removable. They make terminal tools for this but a thin brad nail or a thick paperclip may do. Slide the nail into the connector from the headlight side and the terminal will release. The terminal looks like this, You can see the small tab on the back of the terminal that needs to be depressed
Dont discount a broken solder joint on the bulb itself either! Larry (BlueZilla here) had refered to the correct tool for doing the back-crimp on these connectors. Makes them dang near impossible to remove once installed. Used a dab of dielectric grease on each to prevent future corrosion as well... ws https://www.ebay.com/itm/Automotive...Terminals-Crimp-200mm-Universal-/192070542404
When that has happened to me I soak them in apple vinegar. Pull the connector, let it hang down. Put it in a bag, can, container of choice and cover it in vinegar. Let sit over night. Rise well with water and blow dry. It will come out looking brand new, nice and shiny. If you still have a problem then it may need replacing as mentioned above, or you could have a broken wire or bad bulb.
