Working on the headliner but made a mistake of not installing new bow clips ,the originals looked good but a few of them cracked on me so waiting till ebay sends em ...so lesson is always new clips ...in the meantime I was researching the proper adhesive to use and recommended is that IPS 1829 brush on adhesive but that's a 4 oz can and they say 2 cans are usually needed but the shipping kills you on that one and nobody local to me sells it. The best to use is that Dap landau top adhesive but it only comes in 1 gallon and on that also you get killed on shipping and 1 gallon is just to much for one job and it has a 1 year shelf life according to Dap So I'm bored and doing a simple test between easily obtained adhesives . ----3m 77 all purpose ----Weldwood's regular contact cement-----3M yellow super trim adhesive I took an extra bracket I had and semi cleaned it up...just a fast wire brush and applied to 3 areas as per instructions on amounts and wait time and applied 3 small pieces of my headliner material to each adhesive The 77 had some wiggle room for movement before setting The wellwood went on and stayed on...no wiggle room The 3M yellow super very little wiggle room So now we wait about 24 hrs and then do a pull test ......and also a bonus heat gun test ,which might be premature but what the heck I'm bored ....have many other things to do on car but have to be systematic so I wait for my bow clips to come in I personally would prefer to work with a brush on type instead of spray on for the sake of a cleaner job bcs it can get messy with the sprays...so we see what the fuss is all about with just the easily obtained adhesives, since in my opinion the wind laces and side moldings is the main clamper and protector of whatever adhesive used So place your bets !!
Also I went to my local Dollar store and picked up about 5o of those clip thingies but after watching a youtube video that I missed during my research ,the best way is to cut up your wind lace/ side moldings into 1-2 inch pieces and using them as clamps, but that's only if your planning to replace them of course besides ,what to do with 50 of those clips once your done ? sell em on ebay ?
Also a few here might say to hit a shop and buy a quart of the real stuff ....that might work in small town USA but not in Chicago ...I called two places that do interior and landau work and both said they have it but don't sell it .I imagine bcs that's one less job for them or they might even think I'm a glue sniffer
I believe all 3 would work ,the only advantage with the 77 I see so far was room for movement /wiggle room and time, which is a good thing
while we waiting for all to dry... a question....on the bows where it snaps into the clips are the sleeves left on or trimmed bare ? bcs during my research I saw different variations ,but on differ vehicles ,the popular chevelle one on youtube the only one they trim the sleeve on was the last rear bow clip by rear window
Is that yellow adhesive the same as 3M 1300L? I use that a lot in my job (I build business jets) and the tack/adhesion qualities of 1300L are hard to beat.
The IPS is the best stuff I've ever used. Nothing else is as good. It's a tiny bottle, but goes a long way. If you are going to do a headliner, you want at least one bottle on hand for the tough spots. The Weldwood stuff would be my next choice.
And the winner from these 3 easily available adhesives is ....and it should be bcs almost $22 a can imo any of the 3 would work ,especially with more dry time ......the 3M 77 and Weldwood both about the same strength but the 3m yellow super was much stronger sticking.....I did put some good heat on them and they all peeled off equally....but then again they could of all used much more dry time, none of them were dry -dry within 24 hrs ..and easy to go back on and re-stick .... Also since I prefer to brush it on I will spray the 3M super into the spray lid cap and then brush it on
a re-question.... on the bows where it snaps into the clips are the sleeves left on or trimmed bare ? bcs during my research I saw different variations ,but on differ vehicles ,the popular chevelle one on youtube the only one they trim the sleeve on was the last rear bow clip by rear window
After I ripped my first one at a relief cut I made after pulling harder than needed I ordered another HL and while waiting for it to arrive a forum member sent me out some DAP landau adhesive in a squeeze bottle and told me dont play with the mickey mouse glues for the HL. So let me tell you ....its the correct adhesive for this job and the right way to go . HL #2 ....practice makes perfect ......and yes I can do HL'ers for a living now
