I had to try and defrost the windshield last night and don't think the fan is working.

It sounds like it's on but it's very faint, at best.

I have a new blower motor and am pretty sure it's accessed through the engine compartment. Has anyone replaced one of these and how much of a job is it?

The SOP per the service manual is removing that fender.

I've seen plenty of cars with the inner fender cut open and patched to gain access to it..

On the last car some shop hacked up the passenger inner fender to gain access, though I really wouldn't recommend that..

Cheers, first is it an a/c car or non a/c I did a non a/c car by removing the inner fender to get to the blower motor.pull the battery and the overflow jug,and the tire to give you room. That being said you might check the relay and make sure that you have power to the motor first. You might get lucky and not have to change it.I think you can do the same to get to motor on an a/c car but I have never done one

    I'm hoping it's a relay.

If it is the relay, it works on all speeds but the high.

Where is the relay and how do I check?

Look on the firewall right behind the air cleaner. First visually check the connectors on the relay. Sometimes the plastic melts. Then, while the switch is in high speed postion, see if there is any voltage between the feed to the blower motor and ground.

If good check the resistor array which for a non AC car should be under the dash.

I was able to get mine out of the cat after loosening the inner fender. I thought it would be horrid -- it was a pain in the butt but it did come apart without any major misery (cursing should be encouraged). Start the PB blaster now and repeat a few times.
