So the 550 CCA battery I have cranking on the 455 is marginal at best. Thinking of an AGM in the 700-800 range. I'm sure somebody has experience on how big of a size will swing down and fit into that battery mount area without knocking off the radiator cap or ripping some knuckles. Thanks for your input.

Ross, I just replaced a battery on my 71 skylark today from Costco. The interstate battery 24-700 I used was good for 700 CCA and measured 10.25 inches long by 6.75 wide. I was able to "tip" the battery in under the lip of the fender and it fit great. I believe the original Delco's were group 24 batteries and I think they may have been up to 10.75 in length so wouldn't go longer than that. My car has an AC line that runs right by the radiator side of the battery and does limit the space. Hope this helps.

This and a rebuilt starter from crackauto and it sounds as powerful as a new 455! Its also a perfect fit on the battery tray. The handle comes in handy too! Had one size bigger in there and it was a fingertip job to get it in and out! ws

I quit the Delco brand because the warranty is so poor relative to alternatives. One better alternative is Costco which has a 42 month free replacement warranty. Costco now has Excide build their batteries.
