How many different "legal" colored GSX pics can we get on one thread for easy reference? Doesn't matter if it's original or clone, as long as it was possible. Let me start out with a Silver Mist 1972 GS with GSX stripes. In 1972, from what I understand any color car could be a GSX, so this one is "legal" for this thread. In 1971 there were several colors to choose, and in 1970 just two. Lets see a lot of interesting GSX colors. Lets try not to post pics of the same colors more than once.
Jim, I went to your link and discovered that the cars listed as Saturn Yellow look different from each other. Some look alomst school bus color and others take on a more lemonish yellow hue. Is that just lighting? Which is the true Saturn yellow? I ordered yellow paint for our project the other day. In order to get a color available in Both single stage (for the door jambs and trunk lip) and base/clear for the exterior I needed to opt for a modern version of Saturn yellow. The paint mixer seemed to think that the Millenium Yellow that is used on the recent Corvettes was the closest, so he mixed us up a quart for the door jambs. I opened the can and ...wow, it looks real school bus-like to me. Is this right? I looked through his paint chips and it seemed that everything was either too dark and amberish or too bright and lemony. What color is Saturn Yellow, and what is the closest modern equivalent? Was the paint mixer right?
We have posted the varoius formulas for Saturn Yellow in the past on this Board. http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=64763&highlight=926-AF232
Paint mixer is wrong. Sounds like the guy mixing the paint thinks he is a genius which is definitely not the case... BigNastyGS said it "get a new paint mixer" Good Luck Bert
I would not do what the paint mixer did. I venture to say he has never mixed a drop of Saturn yellow. You cannot go by internet pics or verbal descriptions either. I would recommend using the PPG formula I posted above even if you used Omni -- a lower end version. The paint, fit and finish is everything. Get the right colour by the formula.
Thanks, guys, that sounds like sage advice. Hey Bignasty, does that red X have hydraulics on the front or is the engine missing? uzzled:
Okay, I decided to do it right and not cut any corners on the paint. I went to the best mixer around and he called Dupont to get the right formula for Saturn Yellow (the numbers listed here did not work, as they are outdated). We are painting it with Dupont Chroma base/ clear. Thanks for the help. Sorry to highjack the thread ChinaMike. You may now return to your regularly scheduled thread...
'71 Platinum Mist... (Dad's 71 in Saturn Yellow behind Misty) And the difference lighting makes with this color....
The link is actually old and had a mistake. I thought I got rid of all the old files from the site. Sorry. There were no Saturn Yellow 1971 GSX. It was a 1970 color only. Mark
I agree that there are several shades of the same color shown. Some from previous restoration and the color mixing being different and some from lighting. If you want to check out the real color come the the BPG nationals. I am betting there will be at least one original paint yellow car there and several concourse restored cars that used lacquer for the paint that truly represent the color. The color seems to have more red/orange in it the a lot of yellows. Mark
